Larry Hogan stokes speculation he'll primary Trump in 2020

The president's team is watching the 62-year-old Maryland pol like a hawk.

Republican Gov. Larry Hogan is acting a lot like a guy who wants to run against Donald Trump in 2020 — and the president's reelection team is taking notice.

The second-term Maryland governor has been implicitly going after Trump in speeches, meeting with Never Trump Republicans, and planning a March trip to Iowa as vice chair of the National Governors Association.

It’s all fueling speculation that Hogan, a 62-year-old cancer survivor who coasted to reelection in liberal Maryland and remains one of the most popular governors in the country, is open to the prospect of a long-shot primary challenge to the incumbent president. His flirtation comes at a time when Trump is facing increasing blowback over his handling of the protracted government shutdown and bracing for a potentially devastating report by special counsel Robert Mueller.

Hogan used his inaugural address on Wednesday to repudiate the “debilitating politics” of Washington — and to raise the specter of impeachment. He recalled how his father, former Rep. Lawrence Hogan, was the first Republican congressman to support the removal of Richard Nixon.

The governor didn’t utter Trump’s name, but the implication was clear.

He is a RINO. he wouldn’t make a pimple on Trumps butt

Say it isn't so. First his health should be in question and second he is too wimpy to deal with heads of foreign countries. Can you see him with Putin - hardly. He would be a puppet for Soros. The other Dems campaigning for office woul eat him alive.

Oh no

If he primaries Trump, Trump will beat him. But, Trump will be so politically damaged by the process that he will lose the general election.

Both Jimmy Carter and HW Bush were primariyed – both lost. Nixon, Reagan, Clinton, GW Bush, and Obama were not primaryed.

There is a lesson here – primary an incumbent and they will lose the general election.

RINO Hogan? Not likely...

He's dreaming...RINO's no more...

He's great for Maryland because he needs to compromise with the dumbocrats that the rest of the state elected.

He's not enough of a hardliner to make it in the Oval Office though...

Stay in MD - we need you here now more than ever!

Oh? How much has Hogan saved MD taxpayers compared to Trump.

He'll have to run as a democrat.

Never Trumpers only hurt the citizens hindering the president from doing things that help us.

Lol.

Hogan got my vote for governor in his first election, but never again. No way should this RINO ever get elected for POTUS.

Should Hogan run you can bet MD will cease to be his primary focus. Will he still be the Shore Darling then?

The Governor has more than 4 years of work left to continue straightening out Maryland. That's the best use of his time.

MD is too small a base, and his point of view doesn't sync with the majority of flyover country where the Red votes are.

Hogan vs Van Hollen could be interesting Senate race in 2020.

Nationalists and patriots, get this through your head.

We BARELY won in 2016, and a healthy majority gladly voted for a reprobate opponent.

90% (!) of Montgomery County voted against Hogan, and given the choice you wanted the former lt. governor under Mr. Rain Tax?

While I'm proud of Governor Hogan, regular Patriots need to stand firm and not let the politicians do all our fighting.

Just spit my coffee up all over the computer laughing at this one. I'd vote for O'Malley first becasue at least then you know what you are getting. He would not get more than 5%.

After what he's done in Maryland he is just like O'Malley a nothing ,the two worst Governors Maryland has ever had. Hogan is just like Jake Day a follower and dreamer instead of doing real work for Maryland and making it better both symbolize stupidity. They are absolute failures.

This would be great, he would look like Jeff Flake when the woman next to the elevator got in his face and almost made him cry....Hogan would beg for forgiveness!!

HAHAHA. The chemotherapy went to that fat head. I never vote for that RHINO. Not even for dog catcher.

"...he is just like O'Malley a nothing ,the two worst Governors Maryland has ever had..."

You seem to forget about Parris Glendenning, a real disaster if there ever was one.

Go ahead Larry "MAKE TRUMPS DAY".

Anonymous said...

Maryland elected because he was the lesser of two evils. He is not a good Governor. Did little for the Eastern shore. Pandered to Annapolis. Needs to go away.

Anonymous said...

Nothing. Saved taxpayers nothing. That's why I moved out of MD.

Anonymous said...

Because you are an idiot.

Politicians do fighting?! Are you delusional?? They know what bill is going to pass. Who gonna get what job and where. They watch dumbass people like us fight. You back Hogan?? You already have people stop listening.

The more idiots to run against President Trump

the better our win

The man is a RINO and look at some of the people he has put in charge of our local groups, and he is about to make more bad decisions for the Shore. Just look at the Maryland Justice Reinvestment Act and the Chairman! Horrible.

You mean Parris Spendening

DONT forget RINO HOGAN didn't back Trump for president.

I work with the dpscs here at Eci and I want Larry to run for president. Go Larry go...

Hogan you are a total disappointment
You were just reelected because you were the lesser of 2 evils
Plain and simple
Now just finish your governorship and then go away
Nobody is interested in you anymore
You fooled everyone

I'm sorry but I would have to leave any ballot blank with Hogan's name on it. I voted for him but he won't vote for the good president. Still pray for his cancer issue.

Hogan/Strong

Didn't he have various statues removed from the Governors Mansion property?

Anonymous said...

Oh lovely...….Bush Lite!!

Anonymous said...

Plain - and - simple, Hogan is out of his league. Hogan doesn't have such a remarkable MD record to make him stand out among the crowd. He'll get blown-a-way just like O'Malley.

Anonymous said...

He's Maryland's version of Arizona's McCain. Runs as a Republican, votes as a Democrat. That's why Hogan is beloved in the Blue State of Maryland.

Hogan does not have name recognition outside of this lower east coast. His exploratory campaign is looking to see how he would fair. He is considering it. If he makes a trip to Iowa or New Hampshire then you know he is serious.
