I believe it's because white supremacists believed that the election of Donald Trump meant they could come out of the woodwork again. They began rallying around these statues.
Another question for you:
Why are people up in arms over the use of kneeling during the anthem as protest the same ones wanting to honor those who took up arms against the US flag? Seems even more crazy to me.

These people are the far fringes of the right and if you really talk to them, most see the Confederate flag as an anti-government symbol and are not racist people.
