Maryland is a pretty fantastic state, overall. There are some of the most underrated beaches on the east coast here. The western side has some awesome mountains and scenery. And Baltimore, is well, Baltimore. At least the Ravens are always contenders, and the O’s have proven they can contend in the AL East.
But is it all great in the Old Line State? Of course not. Just like every other state, Maryland has its trouble spots. The purpose of this post is to use science and data to determine which cities in Maryland are the least desirable to live in.
Of course, you’ll most likely disagree if you see your town atop this list. But nonetheless, according to science, these cities are the worst places you could possibly live if you make Maryland your home. These places need a big hug right about now.
After analyzing 191 of the state’s most populous cities (over 5,000 people), we came up with this list as the 10 worst places to live in Maryland:
- Elkton
- Salisbury
- Cumberland
- Hagerstown
- Cambridge
- Lansdowne
- Ocean City
- Robinwood
- Cockeysville
- Middle River

Salisbury and Cambridge are not a surprise. High unemployment and a high unemployment rate amount the young minority population is a recipe for problems.
If anyone reading this FLUFF piece wants to sell me their home in Ocean City cheat....I'll be more than happy to take it off your hands.
And NOTE...they don't even consider Baltimore in this report. They just say "Well...Baltimore is Baltimore.
baltimore should be #1
Yes Yes, we get it, Salisbury is a horrible place, if it was great we wouldn't need Salisbury News right?
Anyway, this looks like another biased "ratings" website that is after clicks more than truthful reporting. The listings make no sense, Salisbury should not be #2 on that list, it should be on the list but not at #2.
Salisbury is only second?!
We got some work to do! We should be #1 - thanks Jimmy, Ricky, and Stevie!
Baltimore was 37 or something like that.
Whatever, says something that SBY is #2 on that list based on stats (not emotion) alone.
How did they miss Fruitland???
Wait, why isn't the racist town of Pocomoke on that list? It is so terribly racist and riddled with drugs since Sewell is gone...(sarcasm)
Sounds about right. Lived in #1 moved to #2 and got the hell out of MD all together.
#6? You've got to be kidding. I'm a local. My family is visiting this week.
Just this morning my wife and 3 grandkids biked on the beautiful boardwalk, had breakfast on the beach. Later today it's mini golf, then the carnival on the pier tonight.
For five months a year we live in that carnival, with all the trappings that go with it (crowds, traffic, and yes, even some crime). We love it. It reminds us of our days in the City of Baltimore. We do sometimes miss the Big City, but it comes to us every year.
Then, for seven months a year Ocean City is the friendliest, most charitable, quiet small town imaginable.
Restaurants within blocks of our home. Neighbors that look out for you and your property. Tons of organizations to get involved with.
Festivals; shows; concerts; activities for all ages.
We never have to travel to see our family: They are MORE than happy to come see us!
Yeah... What a hell-hole we live in.
We only have one regret about living here for the past 19 years in the "sixth worst place to live in Maryland", and that is that we didn't move here 40 years ago.
Just having Ocean City on that list of ten zero's out any chance at all of this survey being even a slight bit believable.
I'm in the process of updating my house right now to get it on the market. This is no longer the land of pleasant living!
Not a surprise, just never listen to Chief Duncan you can be sure her figures will be different, just like they said # 1 crime homicides are down it's all lies, we are the next Baltimore.
Every single problem this community has is directly related to the lack of proper leadership of the course of many years. So many department heads have been underqualified, inept, and just plain selfish. The people of Salisbury had better wake up before its too late, but, Im not so sure it already isnt.
Get rid of the Salisbury Police Department. Let the Mike and his deputies take over. We'd be a lot better off.
A high young minority population is a recipe for problems.
2:37 Leadership cannot make up for deteriorating demographics...which is the real problem here.
To be on the list the town/city has to have a population of more than 5000, Pocomoke is at around 4,500.
I was curious about that to as why other towns on the Eastern Shore were not listed, most do not have the 5000+.
Easton is on the list at 35 and Stevensville at 111.
2:37 I guess your another Salisbury employee that hates their job. Well here's an idea QUIT!! UNQUALIFIED department heads?? You must have a screw lose. Every department head has more HS than you have. Except for the mayors boy toy Stevenson. Why not do your job (if you can) and let the people who lead - lead. You just FOLLOW their lead you may learn something GOD forbid.
The reason why we are #2 is because of people like 2:37!!! We've had MANY qualified department heads here. Well maybe John Jacobs might be who your referring too. He was inept beyond belief. Besides that baffoon the rest worked great for Salisbury. It's the inept and unqualified back stabbing workers that they have to babysit day in day out. One in particular works at the Paoli transfer and EVERYONE knows how inept she is. Just because your in a jod for 20 years doesn't mean you know it.
You hit the nail on the head when it comes to John Jacobs. How do you allow a WWTP be built for MILLIONS and the damn think don't work. Look inept in the dictionary and you will see a pic of that idiot. So for Jacobs alone I agree.
It's oh so true that John Jacobs was in way over his head, but remember who hired him and gave him his daily (and I do mean daily) marching orders.
Nice try 5:37
Regardless of who gives marching orders John Jacobs had to convince both mayor and council to get approval for the BOTCHED WWTP . So DON'T try to blame others for someone who was supposed to be a civil engineer and to do what's best for the city not himself! !!!
I heard he's in charge of the lawn mowers at vdot.
Correct! Until we close ECI and run the scum out of here, this trend is destined to continue.
