Federal judge rules Va. can recall Confederate flag plates

A Federal Judge officially issued a ruling Thursday that will allow Virginia to begin recalling license plates with the Confederate battle flag.

Judge Jackson Kiser granted Attorney General Mark Herring's motion to dissolve an injunction that forced Virginia to put the Confederate flag on certain specialty license plates.

Because the injunction has been dissolved, DMVs in Virginia will begin the administrative process of recalling and replacing existing license plates with ones that comply with Virginia law.

A 2001 injunction allowed the Sons of Confederate Veterans to place the Confederate flag on certain license plates in Virginia.

Looks like freedom of speech is no longer part of the Bill Of Rights.

A one year hold on all sales of confederate flags would be appropriate. If the crime rate nationwide fell dramatically during that time period continue the hold.If it made no difference resume sales. That would be fair to all and prove once and for all if the flag mattered.

Just another example of them stripping away of what we have left. This one to appease the sensitive. It will come back to haunt them. The writing is on the wall and it's very clear.

I see and have some sympathy for both side in the flag 'discussion'.

That said, the state is in charge of what it wants license plates to look like. Once they were all standard and there was no personalization. Then vanity letter/number combinations were permitted. Later came vanity tags tied to various organizations. But there is not an absolute 'right' to have whatever group on a plate.

That said, it has recently been noted that federal law in place for quite a while makes Confederate veterans 'veterans'. They may wish to appeal further.

I'm guessing the plate's bottom line is inoffensive; perhaps a different symbol will need to be selected if an appeal fails.

Just saying,

Another political appointed judge. Thanks for the job boss how do you want me to lean?

What about the money people pay extra for these plates? Must be reimbursed. And I can assure you that many will not be turned in. I wouldn't turn mine in. I'd say some thug stole it.

I guess the soldiers that died in that civil war meant NOTHING..

I paid $25.00 extra for the plate, then $10.00 more for personalization. Now they want my plate back, but no refund, I don't think so.
In calling the DMV, was told a new plate is being designed with a neutral design for replacement plates, so no refunds.
Well, I am just going to put a SCV sticker over the design and waa-la I got my plate with a Battle flag on it, and they can go to hell!

11:52, Good points and well stated. I'm also a firm believer in State's Rights.

The number one problem in this country is that we are allowing it to happen. And I'm as guilty as anyone. I call or write my elected Reps every now and then. But until we stand up and demand, and make them do what We the People want nothing is going to change, except to get worse. tc
