Planning Comm. Endorses New District Where Weekly Rentals Would Be Banned; Council To Have Ultimate Say

OCEAN CITY – The Planning and Zoning Commission forwarded a favorable recommendation to the Mayor and City Council to establish a R-1A Single Family Residential District that would provide an outlet for neighborhoods to ban short term rentals.

On Tuesday evening, the commission held a public hearing to consider amending the zoning code to create an R-1A Single Family Residential District.

The proposed amendment states, “The purpose of this district is to provide for established year round residents to maintain the integrity of family values, youth values, and the blessings of quiet seclusion and to make the area a sanctuary for people living in the neighborhood and to avoid the adverse effects of transient short term rentals. This district is for single-family residential development, together with accessory uses as may be necessary or are normally compatible with residential surroundings.”

I attended this hearing. The meeting was poorly run and the Planners and the ruling class elites were rude and dismissive to the opponents who outnumbered them. Business as usual in OC MD.

OC officials-Take my advice as I've forgotten more than all of you put together can ever hope to know.
Table this when and until an experienced property rights attorney can get on board. I have no idea who advises OC legally but to put it mildly, they leave much to be desired as was seen with the street performer payout, which will look like pocket change if this ordinance is passed.

Loop holes. Don't rent them weekly. Allow people to stay in your home for a minimal donation!

Why did they let the restriction expire? It's something those opposed to renters should have been on top of. To cry foul now is stupefying. Those who purchased homes for rentals looked into their property rights beforehand and should be commended and not vilified because they showed responsibility, something the opposed homeowners are lacking. Knowing your property rights is very important. Even my dog knows his. He barks whenever someone comes on our property.

I know what I would do if I were the big bad landlord Lisa Gorman. I would go and recruit a bunch of pole dancers to perform on the Boardwalk and let them live in the house for free. They could sunbathe out by the pool nude giving the neighborhood stalker who sneaks around taking photos of the rental property something to really look at!

Seriously they are acting like this place is Gibson Island in Anne Arundel county or something. The neighborhood is one step up from a trailer park. The houses are so on top of each other that if one neighbor farts the other will hear it. These people chose to live like chickens in a chicken coop and are now complaining. Well over 20 yrs ago I looked at a house there. The one on the interior opposite corner from the rented property. Having grown up in a secluded home on many bucolic acres I knew I would never be able to live stress free in a sub division and passed on the property. The best decision I ever made. I do maintain a condo in OC for when I want to visit but live most often several counties away on several hundred very private acres where the neighbors are only the wildlife.

Won't fly; will be an expensive lesson for the city when all is said and done.

Most of the homeowners on Mallard Island are O.C. business owners. Hotel owners, restaurant owners etc. So basically they don't want the tourists in their neighborhood but it's ok for them to spend money at their places of business. Go figure.
