Lawyer’s signs raise questions about DUI checkpoints

The lawyer said the signs were created to help drivers stay silent at checkpoints.

BOCA RATON, Florida (MEDIA GENERAL) – A criminal defense attorney is gaining national attention after his message about DUI checkpoints went viral.

Warren Redlich is a criminal defense attorney based in Boca Raton, Florida. In 2013, he published a book called “Fair DUI” and launched a web site of the same name (fairdui.org).

Redlich’s message is that when drivers approach a DUI checkpoint, they are not required to roll down their windows and talk to police. He says by doing so, drivers open themselves up to problems.

Redlich is not the first with this kind of message. But, he is getting a lot of attention after a video he posted on New Year’s Day received 2.3 million views. “It wasn’t what any of us expected,” Redlich told us.

Redlich says the problem lies in allowing an ordinary person the ability to assert his or her right to remain silent without actually speaking. To fix this problem, Redlich has created downloadable signs that can be printed out and put in the car. The signs are even customized for 10 states.

Customized Fair DUI signs:
New York
Florida
California
New Jersey
Ohio
Arkansas
Utah
Texas
Georgia
South Carolina

How about doing your job and patrolling instead of stand/sitting around waiting for something to happen or a drunk to come to you! How about allowing us to travel unmolested by the government. A right not a privilege. All those cops in one spot would be able to deter crime or stop it before it happens alot better if they were out there moving and looking.

Checkpoints presume stopped drivers are guilty of an offense unless and until the inspecting officer permits them to proceed. The Constitution specifically addresses unlawful search and seizure; it is not permitted.

I strongly support keeping drunk drivers, and drugged drivers, off the road but not by surrendering my rights arbitrarily.

The published yield from these extra Constitutional stoppages is low.

DUI checkpoints are another version of stop & frisk. It's a violation of the 4th Amendment.

Then why do bars have parking lots. I also might add zoning laws require the parking spaces. If one drink can put you at or over the limit than we should outlaw alcohol in bars and restaurants. Oh my wait we already tried that once.

Old Mill has a parking lot but you can't park there after hours even though they sold and served you alcohol.

757, I'm 61, and have lived in Florida, Illinois, Michigan, Virginia, and now Maryland, and have met DUI checkpoints in all of the above. For 43 years.

But it was Obama's fault?

Hey, I'm no fan of his Poser, but please, if you want to be on the "other side", please use a brain, if not yours, somebody else's, before commenting.
