Ireton to Travel with Maryland Mayors to Lobby Annapolis for Tax Fairness
Salisbury - Mayor James Ireton, Jr. has joined the Maryland Mayors Association to lobby for tax fairness for city residents across Maryland.
Mayor Ireton, 1st Vice President of the Maryland Mayors Association, will lobby in Annapolis in support of HB690—the “Property Tax Fairness Act of 2015”—on Wednesday, March 4th, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. The hearing, in room 131 of the House Office Building, is assigned to the Ways and Means Committee.
HB690, introduced by Delegate Carol Krimm (D-MD 3A) seeks to re categorize remaining counties in Maryland from “may” produce a tax setoff for municipalities to “shall” produce a tax setoff for municipalities. This would mean counties must provide a property tax setoff if a county and a municipality within the county are providing parallel services paid for with property tax dollars. Under current law, Wicomico County “may” provide a property tax setoff for duplicated services, but is not required to.
“This is my ‘Mr. Ireton goes to Annapolis’ moment,” said the Mayor. “Maryland counties have balanced their budgets on the backs of Maryland cities for far too long. I come to Annapolis on behalf of Salisbury, Delmar, Fruitland, Ocean City, Crisfield, and the more than 900,000 Marylanders who live in municipalities that are taxed by counties. These overtaxed citizens are waiting for those who promised tax relief to make good on those promises. HB690 is tax fairness. HB690 is smart growth. HB690 is long overdue. I urge Governor Hogan, Wicomico County Executive Bob Culver, Delegates Carl Anderton, Mary Beth Carozza, Johnny Mautz, Chris Adams, and Sheree Sample-Hughes to support this legislation. I join mayors that represent hundreds of thousands of Marylanders to say it’s time to end double-taxation. Pass the Property Tax Fairness Act of 2015.”
In Brief:
-Mayor Ireton will lobby with MMA in support of the Property Tax Fairness Act of 2015 (HB 690) on Wednesday, March 4th at the State House in Annapolis.
-HB 690 would mandate tax setoffs for municipalities which provide duplicated services paid for with county property tax dollars.
-In Maryland, 917,027 people live within incorporated municipalities aside from Baltimore City. This makes up 15.5% of the State’s population.

Smoke and mirrors jim bob,
EVERYONE REMEMBERS THE RAIN TAX FOOL.
Please note that Mr. Ireton has appointed himself spokesman for NINE HUNDRED THOUSAND people.
Mr. Ireton wants to be in state office.
Mr. Ireton has compared himself to an iconic character played by an iconic actor (who, by the way, Mr. Ireton, was a REPUBLICAN and a CONSERVATIVE!)
The shameless P.R. use of his elected office, while legal, to promote his own political ladder climbing, is nauseating.
8:33, I couldn't stop laughing when the snow plows were ALLEGEDLY pulling out in Salisbury and he called it the "I Team".
Pardon me, but isn't City tax called a "Piggyback" tax and figured as an added percentage on top of the County tax? That makes the municipalities the primary culprits in overcharging their citizens.
Read between the lines people. Ireton & Council have blown way too much money. Ireton wants a Rain Tax, he wants money from the County and now he wants money from the state, or at least relief. He destroyed Salisbury as well as Tilghman.
And if successful, the county will simply pass on providing services to these towns such as fire code inspections, stormwater management and reforestation which are required in issuing building permits.
If you live in the city, knowing of the double tax imposed BY THE CITY, then you deserve it. Dissolve "Salisbury" as a CITY, and let the COUNTY absorb everything. Done and Done.
Mr. Ireton,
I knew Jimmy Stewart. Jimmy Stewart was a friend of mine. And you, sir, are NO Jimmy Stewart.
