Sheriff's Office K9 was struck by a vehicle at Rt. 50 and Rt 589. Use caution in the area.
They have now made the announcement that the K-9 officer has answered his last call.

It is with a heavy heart that Sheriff Mason announces the line of duty death of K-9 Ike. K-9 Ike was tragically killed while on a traffic stop in Berlin this evening. K-9 Ike was a tremendous asset to the Sheriff's Office and was responsible for numerous apprehensions and drug seizures. Our thoughts and prayers are with his handler and family. K-9 Ike was escorted with full honors to Holloway Funeral Home in Salisbury. The Sheriff's Office would like to thank Holloway Funeral Home, Maryland State Police Berlin and Salisbury, Berlin Police Department, Wicomico County Sheriff's Office, and the Salisbury Police Department. Pictured is K-9 Ike second from left. The loss of this partner can not be explained and the hole it leaves in our agency is large. Again our thoughts and prayers are with K-9 Ike's family and partner.

So sorry to hear this. They (animals) give so much for us.
What are the details? Did the vehicle move over as required by law? How could that beautiful creature be put in that situation?
So quick to blame someone when you know nothing of what happened other than the K9 was struck.
The handler may have done everything the way he/she was suppose to do, it may very well have been a negligent driver who as by law did not yield to the traffic stop, slowing down and given the LE the safety and room they needed to do the job.

To the Officer's handler: I'm so sorry for your loss. I know you are heart broken for losing your partner and friend. My heart goes out to you, your family as well as the Police Department.
My sincerest sympathy goes out to Ike's family and his colleagues at the Sheriff's Dept. To us dog lovers, dogs are so much more, than just a dog.
Ate you kidding me? This is your response. God bless you, that something like this does not happen to you, and you receive such a insensitive comment. You know nothing of the details. Did the suspect try to flee, and the dog hit? You don't know. Shame on you.
Where does it say the handler was negligent? Stupid assumption.

I think that the tax payers of Worcester desrve more detail regarding the loss of this fine animal. Too many times details are swept under the rug when police are involved. I do not see where anyone was arrested or given a citation so we are all left to assume. That being said, prayers to the officer. No one wants their beloved dog to die.
I'm with 454, let's hear details. Was it a stupid move on the part of the handler or a stupid move on the part of a driver passing by?
I'm sure WBOC, WMDT, and the Deadly Times will all have the full investigative story.
So sorry for the loss of the K-9 officer/dog and I am sure the handler feels horrible. However, this needs to be investigated as why a window on the travel portion was left open for the dog to exit. A window on the non-travel--shoulder side could have been left open should the dog need to exit and protect its handler--or not, the handler can like any other officer use his/her GUN
