Guinness Pulls Sponsorship Of New York St. Patrick's Day Parade

What's a St. Patrick's Day parade without Guinness? The organizers of New York City's annual march down 5th Avenue are about to find out.

The makers of the popular Irish beer announced over the weekend that they had pulled their sponsorship of the parade due to organizers' longstanding rule against gay and lesbian groups marching openly.

"Guinness has a strong history of supporting diversity and being an advocate for equality for all,” the company said in a statement posted on the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation website Sunday. "We were hopeful that the policy of exclusion would be reversed for this year’s parade. As this has not come to pass, Guinness has withdrawn its participation. We will continue to work with community leaders to ensure that future parades have an inclusionary policy."

The move by Guinness follows similar moves by fellow beer companies Heineken and Sam Adams, the latter of which pulled its sponsorship from Sunday's parade in the traditional Irish stronghold of South Boston. The decision also left Ford Motor Company as the only major U.S. company sponsoring the New York City parade, which dates back to 1762.

It was the Leprechaun's union that got after Guinness to pull their sponsorship. Leprechauns have long been known to support all human life, regardless of race, color, national origin or sexual orientation. Same with angels.

Corporate cowardice knuckling under to a miniscule group of alternate lifestyle bullies. For shame!

Just made my selection process much, much easier at the grocery and while dining out.

The real Sam Adams and Arthur Guinness are spinning in their graves at such temerity.

Guinness is now a subsidiary of London based beverage conglomerate Diageo, which has lots of brands to now avoid. And Sam Adams is no longer the feisty start-up; if they're big enough to spit in the face of their hometown it's time to wish them poor results, too. Heineken is a Dutch operation.

Fie on them individually, and collectively! Hope parade organizers keep them out in years to come.

This is traditionally a catholic event and the St. Patrick's Day Parade in New York is over 100 years old. Though I support gay rights, I think this should just be left alone - and by the way - New York said they could march but they could not have signs bringing attention to themselves - and it was still not good enough. But enough is enough - I for one will not support Guiness or Sam Adams. This parade holds a lot of history and memories for people.

I think that when people hear about gay pride parades they think of the ones where gay men are half naked, painted pink and wearing lipstick. The gay pride parades that I have seen in the news that are like that ruin a family event. I for one don't want to have to explain such behavior to a child. I have gay friends and think that the people who have been pushing gay pride down everyone's throats don't have any idea how a gay relationship should appear in a parade. Maybe they should have a naked pole dancing float to include strippers as well. Really?

Actually it is't just Guinness, every beer company except one has pulled their sponsorship. So have a multitude of other companies. Just like Arizona business community wants no part in discrimination.

Guinness, Sam Adams, and Heineken are 3 beer brands I will no longer buy.

If I were homosexual I would want to know where NOT to spend my money (this in relation to the AZ veto issue.) I would want to know which businesses didn't approve of homosexuality. Gays are just stupid and must have some kind of mental defect. No one in their right mind would want to do business and hand over their hard earned money to someone who looks down on them. The way I see it, I don't approve but I'll take their money any day, laugh all the way to the bank and just trash talk them behind their backs.
