Students In One MD County Get New Cellphone Policy

Students in Howard County are getting a new surprise this fall: They no longer have to hide their phones in their lockers anymore.

That's because school officials say it is now OK for them to use their smart phones before school, at lunchtime in the cafeteria, and even in the halls while they're changing classes.

School Superintendent Renee A. Foose told WBAL Radio’s Bill Vanko Tuesday that it simply doesn't make sense for schools to treat using a cell phone like an academic crime.

i think it's a smart idea. Just like banning guns, if they want to use it it's gonna happen regardless. they will find a way. why not give them an alloted time during the day to talk to their friends that they don't share lunch with or don't go to the same school with.

11:37 you're just oldschool and need to get your head out of your @$$

Its a good idea. God forbid if something happens I want my child to be able to contact me or the police.

god for bid anyone that graduated prior to 1999 probably didnt have or need a cellphone in school. what if something happens, big if, and your darling calls you? you can't do anything, the school will be locked down, police will block access roads and others like you will race to school causing more problems. Their little brains are being fried by microwaves. Children should not be using cellphones.

1:31 Do u really think their not bringing the phones to school now??? Step into 2013 please.School system is getting tired of complaints from parents about confiscated phones and students getting detention over them.

So if something does happen u would rather not hear from child and just wait till the school notified u that harm was done to your kid?? That makes sense...

If kids are using them in school when it against the rules then the parents are to blame. That's like saying that they smoke at home so they can smoke in school or they use guns at home so they should be able to take them to school. I know responsible parents that do not allow their younger children to have or use a cellphone until they are 13.

@3:24 and I bet you think banning guns will make the amt of shootings go down. you're damn crazy. just shut your mouth now.

Who made 4:32 God? Funny how people that cannot put a sentence or thought together just want to tell people to shut their mouth. Post doesn't say anything about banning guns, just that children should not take them to school.
