Report: Later School Start Would Help Economy

Maryland's comptroller on Thursday called on schools to start after Labor Day in hopes of boosting the state's economy, citing a report projecting a delay in beginning the school year could result in an additional $74.3 million in direct economic activity.

The report by the Bureau of Revenue Estimates projected that delaying the first day of school would result in $3.7 million in new wages and a separate $7.7 million in state and local revenue.

"The chance for families to spend precious time together and to build lifelong memories during that final, end-of-summer vacation has been lost by the decision to begin school a week, or even 10 days, before Labor Day," Comptroller Peter Franchot said. "Not only does this cut into the opportunity for Marylanders to spend more time together as a family, but it also has a negative impact on small businesses."

Duh!

Those libtards that started school before labor day, were out to try and ruin summers last holiday.

How about closing schools all together! School is no more than away for the government to brain wash kids!

School should start a couple of days after Labor Day and should stop on the day before Memorial Day. It will make no difference to their education if they are in school 170 days vs. 180 days. The children, parents and teachers are done by the end of May. The last few weeks of school is spent watching movies and finishing up make up work. Total waste of time and money.

What the hell does the Comptroller have to do with school schedules? If he were not running for governor we would never hear from him! It's all just a publicity stunt.

Most inner city kids are home schooled. Kids learn from watching their parents do their illegal stuff.

WHY DID THEY EVER CHANGE IT? It was working well before the political jack rearenders started it.

The reason schools close after Memorial Day and open before Labor Day is so that teachers can get their 10 Professional Days in. That is actually 2 weeks more of vacation for the teacher at the students expense.

Since when do politicians know anything about education? Would you want a politician telling a doctor how he should treat patients? I wouldn't and they shouldn't be telling educators how to educate children. Just look at Commom Core and testing. It is about time we put students first and not about OC businessman generating more money and taxes that politicians can waste. I'm sure he is going to tell the colleges they can't start before Labor day since they are the workforce in OC. HAHAHA not likely.

What happened to the "year 'round" school movement that is happening in Delaware??

Anonymous said...

Why bother to send them to school at all??

Just don't continue to pay educational employees if you reduce the time that they must educate.

Get rid of professional days. If you want them, have them all summer long. That solves the problem right there.

Kids and teachers go back earlier in hopes that adding five instructional days before the March testing will raise scores. Only reason starting date was changed.

Why do teachers need 10 professional days during the school year when they have the entire Summer off to get all the professional development they need. They don't take PD classes while off anyway. It's just another vacation day for the teachers.

FYI going back early didn't help test scores! But getting the test graded in March is cheaper than June. That is why assessments are given in March and not at the end of the academic year! Again it's all about money, not what is best for the student!

Franchot is a complete moron, only interested in more tax dollars for the state. It wouldn't boost the economy as the college kids are gone already. Most families don't take a vacation at the end of summer as kids sports are already in full swing. The kids actually need more time in the classroom because the classes they take are far more advanced then what we parents took as children. Franchot couldn't run an ant farm. He and o'malley are total idiots and have ruined what was once a great state!

and there is McDermott in uniform getting paid with Worcester County tax dollars and doing his state job getting paid by State tax dollars---I support him but this is WRONG!!!

7:50: what school did you go to, Inner City?? Schools are now teaching in college the same material that was taught in grade school 50 ears ago. Some college certificates are about equivalent to a GED.

Entire summer off, bozo??? Look on the calendar and come back and tell me when summer officially ends...I don't understand why people get so upset about the amount of time teachers have off.. Did they not decide upon their profession..have you ever stepped into one of the worst schools in the county and actually endure what some teachers do? I wish that you could change roles for a day..you have no clue..sometimes I don't even know why I respond to such stupidity.

Part of the problem is that some teachers can't TEACH. They just expect the student to learn by assigning homework. BUT, it isn't always the teacher's fault. It is impossible to teach when the student doesn't want to learn. It all starts in the home environment. Yes, I'm an x-teacher.

And you call Professional Development a vacation??? Have you ever been a teacher..because I'm sure they would much rather spend time with their precious family then endure 10 days of PD.. Once the school year begins teachers get to spend hardly anytime with their family.

Do you see the hypocrisy in your post? Did you choose your profession? You are complaining about them complaining.

You are right. They are doing nothing but watching movies, having field days and going on field trips the last 2 weeks of school. What a joke.

Don't get so offensive. Yes I said entire Summer off. Yes I do have a clue. Yes you did chose your profession because you know you are backed by the lawless teachers union and you know you get all that time off. Since you chose your profession quit complaining about the worst schools in the county. Why don't you give back some of your pay so we can make the schools better. Have you teachers and administrators endured furloughs while city, county and state employees did? You hypocrite.

I see the loser school teacher Anon 10:00 is posting again. You know damn well you get "professional development" ever single PD day you have off. None of the teachers do. Again get your PD during the Summer.

Franchot isn't running for governor. He considered it, but decided not to. Smart move because the party doesn't like him because he is conservative and worries about money. The horror!

"Once the school year begins teachers get to spend hardly anytime with their family."

YOUR unions created this situation, NOT the parents of these children. We only want quality education for the kids. If you are not interested in providing this, move on and give our kids better.
