A Letter To The Editor: Wicomico Board of Education

Why is it that the Wicomico Board of Education is always trying to cover something up? This summer the Parkside football team went to the University of MD for their football camp. During their stay the upper class boys hazed the freshmen by pinning them down and acting as if they were raping them from behind (clothes on) One of the freshmen went home and told his parents and they wrote a letter to the University who in turn contacted the school and board. From what I have been told 2 of the boys have been suspended and the Coach wants to take care of it. Is this not something the Board should take care of starting with the Coach? What about the other kids who didn't tell, shouldn't their parents be told? This was a sexual assault and the Board is going to cover it up. From what I was told this type of thing is not uncommon in Wicomico County boys sports.

lmao it's not uncommon in any of the schools in this county let alone boys sports programs. The board of ed has more then one skeleton in their closet!

They learned that stuff in second period Sex Education Class. That stuff is normal now.

don't ask don't tell

So let me get this straight. The older boys acted like they were humping the younger ones from behind with clothes on? Big deal! Find something else to complain about.

No news here, nanny state bs.

...AND YOU WONDER WHERE THE GOOD OLD BOY SYSTEM IS LEARNED!

The news is, this fool classifies this as a sexual assault.
No it shouldn't be happening but you don't cry wolf for a chihuahua.

All tthey do is cover stuff up.

Same stuff has been going on in the locker room forever. Big deal.

When I was in the Navy way back in the '70s the guys in the engine room did this all the time. It's not a big deal.

I don`t know who the fool is who compared the Wico school system with the Navy. This is a group of highly impresionable STUDENTS who are at the crossroads of their lives and trying to make intelligent choices for their LIFETIME we are dealing with, NOT the engine crew on a seagoing tub!
I thought GUIDENCE was what the school system was all about. The nurturing of the Countrys' young is the MOST important thing John Fredricksons' gang can do, OH and by the way they get paid for it! I am a Marine veteran and can say even at 18 yrs. old such conduct would have been chastized and after one had pushed Paris Island DOWN another inch don`t worry you wouldn`t THINK about a move like that much less do it. Based on Fredricksons' past performance, I`d say he needs MORE THAN WATCHING, some ACTION is appropriate.

The younger kids were bullied. Something should be done by the board. I would say something very crude about the board, Ireton and Frederickson, but I will refrain. Time for a change.

This was not a county or school sponsored activity so this is a mute issue. Yes, the players were from Parkside and the coach was a member of the camp staff but you can't hold the Board responsible for something out of season.

Just because your little Johnny got humiliated, you want the Board to solve it. Tell him to grow up or be a waterboy.

I disagree with you blah blah blah blah this is nothing comments. Just because it has gone on for years and is done in the army does not mean to look the other way! Kids get bold and kids get killed. It is not ok. Some kids commit suicide over this humiliation. Wake up. You get raped in the army now. Anyone who participated should be kicked off team. Why tolerate this? It is an act of degrading others. Sports and the players are so debased these days.

This is what kids put up with in public school. Where were the chaperones?

What if it was you sounds like what happens in prison. Parkside has a few sick puppies. Wonder how the girls are treated by these boys?

In a few more years some will be sex offenders. Silence is compliance. Thanks for making parents aware of the problem with the Parkside sports team.

If these kids are wimpy enough tp put up with it, they don't deserve to be on the team in the first place. Will come off the field crying the first time they get hit.

Boo hoo. Grow a pair boys and suck it up.

Anonymous said...

Wow. Grown a pair boys? You must be the dad of one of the boys who thought it was funny to commit an act of homosexuality.

Conduct described is a sex offense. Absolutely no doubt about it. Call a cop. This should not be handled by the school system.

If the parent feels that their child was sexually harassed they need to contact the police.

Sounds like something an attorney could make a $bundle$ on in a short time.. Any takers??

The county's bullying policy:
“Bullying, harassment, intimidation, or hazing” means any intentional conduct, including verbal, physical, written, or electronic communication (electronic communication such as cyber-bullying, means a communication that is transmitted by means of an electronic device, including but not limited to: telephones, cellular phones, computers, pagers, I-Videos or digital cameras) that creates a hostile educational environment by substantially interfering with a student’s educational benefits, opportunities, performance; or with a student’s physical or psychological well-being and:
• is motivated by any actual or perceived characteristic, such as race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, socioeconomic status, familial status, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression; or a mental, physical, sensory or any other disability; or
• is threatening or seriously intimidating; or
• has the effect of humiliating, insulting or demeaning any pupil or group of pupils in such a way as to cause substantial disruption in or substantial interference with the student’s ability to access and benefit from their regular education program or the orderly operation of the school; or
19
• is something that a reasonable person should know, under the circumstances, that the act(s) will have the effect of harming a student or damaging the student’s property or placing a student in reasonable fear for his/her person or to his/her property.
• includes a student exercising power and control over another student, either in isolated incidents such as intimidation, harassment or hazing or patterns of harassing or intimidating behavior over time such as bullying.

At the very least the "upper class" boys should be suspended. Even though this happened outside of school the boys were representing Parkside High School. The coach in charge should also be suspended from coaching. These types of things are exactly what causes kids to have low self esteem and possible become suicidal or homicidal. Without punishment to the "upper class boys" and the coach in charge it will continue.

I think this is bullying and some type of molestation. I have no idea the legal term. It was against their will, of a sexual nature and fear and intimidation was used. Isn't it something a pedophile would do? Sure it was against their will. This was not hazing. Id also be very wary of the kids who were the leaders. Who else are they abusing?

Big deal??? Are you some kind if pervert yourself? Yes, it's a BIG deal!

Well stated!

I have just spoken with both of my girls about this very thing! If they think this is OK to do to one of the guys, how would they treat a girl? Parents, since the board will not step in, we had all better prepare to protect our own. If it were my child, there would be a law suit!!!

Frightening! If you are a parent, it sounds like you may be encouraging this type of behavior. If so, I hope you are also prepared to fund the lawsuit against your child if he is one of the hazers!
