A drop in voter turnout in Tuesday's election didn't keep President Barack Obama from winning a second term.
Preliminary figures suggest fewer people voted this year than four years ago, when voters shattered turnout records as they elected Obama to his first term.
In most states, the numbers were even lower than in 2004, said Curtis Gans, director of
American University's Center for the Study of the American Electorate. Early figures from every state but Iowa showed a smaller turnout than in 2008, Gans said. Still, the full picture may not be known for weeks because much of the counting takes place after Election Day.

Final Presidential popular vote was 273 Romney 265 Obama. Why bother voting when the electoral vote guarantees that the fix is in! I'm a registered democrat and voted a straight republican ticket, no exceptions, as did my 85 year old father. All of our family (6) plus two life time dyed in the wool democrats I know, one of whom is a very high organizer in the sussex county democratic party, all voted against Obama. Debt was 10 trillion when Obama came in, now it's almost 17 trillion, no new jobs, more free loaders then ever and a society that's irreversibly and morally decayed. My father and I, both agree that we're finished wasting our time with voting and politics. When the democratic free loader ship finally sinks in the next few years, chaos and revolt will become the norm. At least some of us will remember that we tried to stop it. Free loaders and other like bums had better get ready because there's no one in this world that will be willing to bail them out. Survival will come down to the haves that have prepared and the have nots that chose their destiny decades ago. Germany after Hitler's death will be a good point of reference for survival.
