Spice Threatens Health; Local, State Legislators Work To Remove It From Stores

Douglas Latenser suspects that the unknown ingredients in the "Spice" he smokes could be worse for him than marijuana.

Latenser, 31, bought the synthetic drug Monday legally from Classic Cigars & British Goodies even though the unknown ingredients concern him. It may be worse for his health to smoke Spice, but he does it so he will not fail a drug test while he is on probation, he said.

"I don't really know what's in it," Latenser said.

Marijuana should be legal and the war on drugs should end, he said. Unlabeled products, sometimes called potpourri, pose new threats to the health of young and old who buy Spice -- a brand name often used generically -- and other synthetic drugs, city leaders say. Spice, which mimics marijuana, and other synthetic drugs pose a changing public health threat that city and state leaders are uniting to address.

So it's "legal" to sell the fake stuff, but illegal to sell the real stuff?

No wonder America is in a downward spiral.
