Maryland Teen Attacked in Front of TV Crew

Cameras didn't scare off so-called bullies at a Maryland high school who were so bold they attacked a teen right in front of a TV news crew.
Preston Deener, a sophomore at Brunswick High School in Frederick County, said he was suspended last week for fighting back against a bully. Because of the suspension, Deener, 15, was not allowed to attend the homecoming dance.
Deener was attacked again Monday as he was getting ready to be interviewed by WHAG, a Hagerstown TV station, about the alleged bullying and his suspension.

This young man is wise beyond his years. His attackers are obviously the kids of affluent or influential parents. He is going about this in a way that will bring attention to the enablers.

I've seen the 0 tolerance fighting policies backfire too many times.

When I went to high school in the 90's, I was attacked and fought back. I was suspended for two weeks. The second week was because I said that I would defend myself if I was ever attacked again. The fact that I did fight back was a big reason why that group of people never messed with me again.

When I applied to college, I got called in for a behavioral interview at my school of choice because I had a disciplinary issue on my record. The fact that I the only thing I had was one fighting suspension my freshman year from high school didn't matter much. I was asked if I learned anything from the incident, I said that I learned that people will be subjected to constant verbal and physical bullying if they don't show themselves to be at least as strong as the bully. And that while I respect a no fighting environment, sometimes you have to stand up for yourself because others aren't going to. That response put me on their waiting list.

I wasn't a bad kid by any stretch of the imagination. I never got in trouble (other than this), I was in extracurricular activities, and I graduated with a 3.2 GPA and seven AP exams scored 3+. I should have been a shoe-in for admission to that school.

In the end, I came out of it just fine so I"m not bitter. And I'm a better person for being able to realize that unquestioned obedience isn't the right answer to anything.

But this poor kid, being tormented like this, is sad. As a victim, he is punished every time he has to see these bullies. And then when he realizes that the system won't defend him and he needs to do so himself, he gets punished by the system. I hope that he can learn the same lesson that I did, and be comfortable with himself. And I hope that the failure of the system doesn't cause him significant problems.

For every kid that gets suspended for defending him or her self, I hope the schools get a lawsuit from the parents...better yet, a personal lawsuit against those who punish children for protecting themselves.

This is outrageous.

I hate to say it but its gonna get worse now that the state is saying not enough white kids are suspended.
