Eastern Shore Drivers Urged To Use US 301 As US 50 Contruction Continues

The State Highway Administration (SHA) reminds drivers traveling to and from the Eastern Shore to use US 301 as an alternate route or travel during off-peak hours due to the reconstruction of the westbound US 50 Bridge in Queenstown.
The left lane of the highway has been closed so crews can replace the bridge deck as part of the $2.8 million project.
The SHA said the northbound and southbound lanes on US 301 will also be closed overnight from time to time as crews demolish parts of the road and install new steel beams on US 50 that runs above it.

The best thing to do went headed westbound is to just after the Rt401 intersection of Rt 50 get in the right lane and turn right at the next traffic light. I'm not sure of the Rt number but it's the intersection where Chesapeake College is. There will be signs to direct you to 301 South which is what you want. You will eventually come out behind the Queenstowns outlets and merge back onto Rt 50 West toward the Bay Bridge. It's not much more out of your way.

Don't you mean "just after Rt.404 intersecttion of Rt. 50".

Yes, 4:34 It's Rt 404. Thanks for noticing and correcting. I would have hated to send anyone on a wild goose chase.

They have been working on this Bridge since 1986. Man, if I worked that slow I would be fired!

It not the bridge but that brick overpass that's is just west of the Queenstown outlets. It goes down to one lane and sometimes on weekends traffic is backed up a few miles west of Easton-almost 20 miles.

Does this figure. We have but a few ways to get off the Eastern Shore and now we have to deal with this. I still say a new crossing needs be made somewhere between the Bay Bridge and the Bay Bridge Tunnel.

The road at the next traffic light past 404 is Centerville Rd. (RT 213) and I would also suggest anyone headed toward the Bay Bridge to take it (a right) even if you aren't backed up to there yet. If you happen to miss it then take Bloomingdale Rd which will take you directly to 301. If you do this you could save yourself alot of headaches with the traffic.

I wouldn't call Sunday afternoon "off-peak hours" for the west-bound span. It was a 14-mile backup this weekend. Thank goodness for GPS and back roads...

you would think the politicos would wise up and build a limited access toll highway from the bay bridge to oc before the price of the land along this corridor increases. Thus enabling people another route to the beach with out having to stop at all those traffic lights thus backing up traffic for miles! Oh yeah, that's right, sorry my mistake that would make sense and in this heavily democratic state unless the money is being thrown down a black hole in baltimore or pg county then it's just not a worthwile endeavour!

Joe you are a little late in telling folks about this project. This project began more the 3 weeks ago.

Let me tell you what is happening here. MD SHA has contracted Corman Construction to replace the bridge deck. The primary reason for doing so is to increase the vertical clearance under the bridge.

The old spans will be removed and replaced, one lane at a time, by a new span with no expansion joint on the center pier bearing. The existing brick work on the abutments will be repaired and retained.

I was very relieved to learn that Corman Construction was doing the work as Corman Construction is one of the if not the best contractor doing work for MD SHA.

Total project length 7 months. The project is scheduled to be done by Memorial Day 2013. I expect it to be done early based on the past performance by Corman Construction.
