The American Dream Hinges On Organized Labor

That's the conclusion of a new study by the Center for American Progress looking at data from the Pew Research Center. The study looked at unionization rates within states and found that states with the highest percentage of unionized workers also have the highest rates of economic mobility – as in, the chances that someone born into the middle class can work their way into the upper class. Being able to come from nothing and live a successful life is the basis of the American Dream. Unfortunately, the United States now lags behind the rest of the developed world when it comes to economic mobility. Today, more than 2/3 of Americans born in the bottom-fifth income bracket – will stay in the bottom two-fifths income brackets their entire lives. A lot of that has to do with a 32-year war against organized labor starting with Ronald Reagan. The study concludes by showing that just a ten-percent boost in unionized workers in an average state would increase economic mobility by 4%. It's time to bring democracy back to the work place through unions and give workers a shot at what they've been promised – a shot at the American Dream.

Article is the biggest bunch of bull that I have ever read. Unions keep people back and people can't be fired for good reasons either

Do it yourself, work hard and be something in life

Unions were needed 100 years ago... not today

3:28, you are absolutely correct. Unions are a waste. This is one of the biggest problems with waste with the State and Federal Govt. They FORCE companies to use union labor which in turn, increases the costs umpteen percent! Merit workers not only do a better job (because they don't just do the minimum to get by) but they are fair wages instead of ridiculous wages. State & Federal unions are the absolute worst too! Waste.

The American dream died because of organized labor. There, I just said it out loud. Call me on it.

I will not only call you on it but I will raise you, union workers not only do a better job but because of the training they receive are more cost effective in the long run. Union workers are better trained where you know the standard you are getting to nonunion where any guy of the street can be called a mechanic with little our no training. Unions currently are spearheading the surge in safety standards for industries. In recent studies it had also shown that the standard of living in right to with states is lower than in states with unionized labor. As someone who has worked in both union and nonunion shops, working under an organized labor agreement within a union is much beret for any worker. It id a myth to believe unions are not still needed, because without representation an employer will do whatever it thinks it can get away with, just ask Walmart employees.
