Romney Sticks By 'Victims' Comments, But Calls Them 'Off The Cuff'

Mitt Romney is sticking by his comments captured in a video at a fundraiser earlier this year in which he told donors that President Obama's base supporters are "reliant on government," don't pay taxes and "believe they are victims."
The Republican presidential nominee assembled a brief and to-the-point press conference Monday night to address the tape, which had been posted online by liberal magazine Mother Jones.
Romney, while saying his phrasing was not ideal, stood by the premise of his remarks, which reportedly came from a fundraiser in Florida.

it is the truth, i do not understand why romney is afraid to stand up and be firm on what is reality

It's bad enough when 50% aren't paying anything, even worse when they sit around on the duffs and draw money from the system. Twice the damage done!

never be afraid to speak the truth.

It's politics, it's all about playing the game to become elected. If he backs off then some see him as a coward but if he doesn't he basically throws all those votes out the window, you know the welfare demographic he is talking about in his statement. Although he is telling the truth he is hurting himself in the race for President.

The majority of those not paying income tax are seniors on SS.

eh no worse than Pres Obama's "clinging to guns and religion" statement. They may be insulting to the various groups but there's elements of truth to both statements.

Your ignorance is astounding.
Your statement is false.
Learn about the facts.

Oh what a surprise. Joe doesn't post a comment pointing out the clear fallacy in Romney's argument.

There is no comment to post. The ONLY comment that was rejected was on another post and it was rejected because of the language.

Romney is correct . . . about half the people don't pay income taxes. The welfare demographic that make up Obama's core will never vote for Romney. Romney's message of individual freedom and responsibility doesn't resonate with them. Why should he pander or "worry" about their vote.

The man is clueless, I make $200,000 a year, pay plenty in taxs and I support the president.

The people he refers to would NOT be any who supports him. He was actually trying to point out that the real race will be won by swaying the undecided/independent voters, since each side has a lock on certain segments of the electorate. Straight truth. Why won't the media address obama's 90%+ grip on the black vote? If 90% of white people voted for Romney, there would be a FIRESTORM of media stories....

You are full of crap!

Nothing Romney said was slander or false. He is 100% accurate with those words.

Anonymous said...

Yes he is 100% accurate and everyone knows he wasn't referring to the disabled, seniors, veterns, and the truly needy so quit the spin. The only reason this is even an issue is to take the focus off of Obama's latest cluster in the Middle East.

well now it is possible he takes in $200K a year, but please tell me how many welfare babies does one need to foster to get that kind of cash? Couls this be the reason you support him?

1:13, by the numbers, if he's referring to the "47% who don't pay income tax" he IS talking about "the disabled, seniors, veterns, and the truly needy". Look at the tax breakdown for yourself. There is no spin needed.

Bottom line, he said it..he owns it. You all can spin and justify all you want in your make believe world but the truth is Romney has no clue about the middle/working class. He's talking about most of you numbnuts.

Anonymous said...

1:14, you are so retarded. Here's a newsflash...there are many, that's right many voters making $200K and more...much more that support this President. Now go back to sleep in your Wonderland Alice.

2:17 wrong again bud. Look at the census report and look at the 2008 election returns. You know, despite Limbaugh, Hannity, and Fox News, facts do still matter.

The 47% refers to the percentage of voters who will vote for Obama regardless, including those who do not pay fed income tax, those who rely on entitlements, etc. If you see what he said before and after the few select lines that have been played it is clear he was talking about percentage of voters not percentage of people who don't pay fed income tax which is more like 53%.

lol keep on squirming. Sorry son, 60+ seconds that includes the entire question and answer is far from a "few select lines". You act as if the entire transcript isn't a 5 second google search away.

But I guess you want us to believe that it is just coincidence that Romney says;

"These are people who pay no income tax. Forty-seven percent of Americans pay no income tax."

Within the same statement as:
"There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe that government has a responsibility to care for them..."
