Maryland Obesity Rate Could Double To 59% By 2030

Maryland’s adult obesity rate could more than double by 2030 if steps aren’t taken soon to reverse the course, a new analysis released Tuesday shows.
The “F as in Fat” report from Trust for America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation says Maryland’s obesity rate could reach 58.8 percent over the next 20 years. That’s up from 28.3 percent in 2011, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The report says a bump in obesity would likely result in rising obesity-related disease rates and health care costs. For example, obesity could contribute to 741,358 new cases of type 2 diabetes and more than 1.5 new cases of coronary heart disease and stroke in Maryland, the report says.

"F as in Fat" report?

If any of us termed anyone "fat," the same people who back this report would be screaming for our heads because of our insensitivity!

I prefer to think of myself as "weight challenged", thank you very much!

The 47% need to get off their asses and get a job that would be a good start on fighting obesity

Role model for children.

This news is to prepare us for the new rules under Obamacare where obesity is going to be considered a mental illness and if you aren't "cured" of your mental illness don't hold you breath waiting for any treatment caused by obesity.

11:36, actually we just need to start charging fat bodies higher premiums and copays

Yes that makes the most sense 11:45 but not under Obamacare. Everyone pays the same no matter how high risk they are so in order to keep the system from going broke, these government bureacrats that have been hired will make "recommendations" to doctors concerning treatment.

Weight challenged? Must be a government worker. Do they have a little book to use for reference when they need to say something that is uncomfortably true but may offend some people? Maybe if more people actually pointed out that being 5'6" and 400 lbs is NOT "challenged", but just plain FAT, more poeple would stop at the 5th donut instead of scarfing the whole dozen. As in "park at the END of the row and walk your fat ass another 40 yards" instead of putting your emergency flashers on and WAITING for a really close-to-the-door spot. thanks for listening....lol

Must be trying to justify another tax.

The commenters on this blog are full of judgement. I work with obese people everyday as they try to improve their lifestyles. Habits made over a lifetime are not reversed in a short period of time. The ugliness on this blog astounds me. And yet you wonder why conservatives have such a difficult time convincing others of their path to a better tomorrow.

Imclain, read that full comment again. I think the person was being funny (sarcastic).

Government should weight everyone receiving Food Stamps... Why should obese people be eligible for food benefits?

As a fast person I am far healthier than most of the skinny people I know. My BP and cholesterol have always been excellent and I'm almost 42. Hell I can can walk further than a lot of the skinny people I know as well. Being fat does not always mean your unhealthy just as being skinny does not always mean you are healthy.
