No! Kids need more sugar. It's their right to eat what they want.

a healthier lunch for those purchasing lunches is a great idea. it may be the only healty lunch the child gets. parents should also be packing health lunches for their child. wheat bread with peanut butter, raw carrots, fruit, 100% juice boxes. every now and then chips, not an every day occurrance. healthy meals and snacks helps our children function better and they are more alert. remember they are our future. (and they may be choosing your nursing home facility sometime in the future!)

Isn't that the parent(s)job to see to it that they pack a healthy lunch for their child? Oh, I forgot, the gov't provides their breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The gov't (school) cafeterias throw away food that the kids will not eat everyday. Because of liability issues, tons of school food goes in the garbage instead of to charities

I was in a school cafeteria about a week ago. There were 2 drink machines. One had all soft drink products and the other had fruit and vegetable choices.Looking around I did not see anyone drinking anything but soft drinks. If the schools can make the healthier meals attractive and good tasting I'd be all for it.

I have to wonder how many of the students that bought those sodas also get a free lunch. They seem to have money for such things but not money to buy their own food.

Ok people the reality in this is even if they offer a healthier lunch, the kids won't eat it. Because they are allowed to purchase chips and ice cream. They get their free or reduced meal, then they dump it in the trash. Then they get in line and are allowed to buy up to 3 snack items. It could be 3 bags of chips 3 ice creams or any other combination of three. This is going on daily. So tell me something how is it a kid that gets free or reduced meals has the money for snacks but not to purchase their own meal? Things that make you go Hmmmmmmm.

The students who get free / reduce lunch, should be made to pay a portion. Stop the free ride on other peoples backs. The Board of Education is short on monies and any level of government complains they do not have enough money. Stop the free / reduce lunches ... each one needs to pay more then they are and if they are allowed a snack let it be grapes/apples/carrots .....

I think they should make it so if you are collecting food stamps you should NOT get a free breakfast/lunch. After all isn't that double dipping? Their parents are given money to feed the kids not run to the seafood market to burn it up buying luxury things that THEY want. The money is for the KIDS not the parents. They can pack them a lunch just like I used to do with my child.

I have to say that I have seen a big difference in the menus this year for my kids. They now sell great looking and fresh salads, have fresh fruit each day like watermelon, strawberries, watermelon, etc. Today they had local corn on the cob.

Yes, they can still by snacks but I only let my kids buy them once a week. Also, there are no drink machines in elementary schools.
