Chevy Volt Battery Plant Floundering Despite $151 Million From Obama

Another in a long list of Obama-touted and tax-supported “green energy” companies is on the verge of going out of business, this time in Michigan. Two years ago, President Obama visited the LG Chem battery plant in Holland, Michigan. Obama then hailed the plant saying, “You are leading the way in showing how manufacturing jobs are coming right back here to the United States of America.” But today, those LG Chem jobs Obama claimed were “coming back” are seeing intermittent layoffs instead of growth. In 2010, the plant, which supplies batteries for the Chevy Volt, received $151 million in tax money from the U.S. Department of Energy, but it has been good money after bad. Today, $133 million of that $151 million has been spent, but since April, the company’s 200 workers have been on “rolling furloughs” because the electric vehicle market has failed to blossom as promised by many. In 2010, the plant was projected to create 443 new jobs within five years. Those projections have been shelved as the company says it can’t predict when the furloughs will stop for its current employees. More

Making the transition to an electric car is way more expensive than most thought it would be.Rich people make plans that work for other rich people.Speaking only for myself,the electric car market is out of reach.I thought the volt would be $10,000 cheaper than it is.When any struggling family weighs their options even their 18 MPG beater is more affordable.

I wouldn't have one even if someone paid me to drive one because I hate small cars.
Another problem with electric cars is you get 2 or 3 in a neighborhood charging at the same time and the electric system goes down. If you don't believe this look it up. It's been a hugh problem in CA.

how can having a car that must be PLUGGED in be cost efficient? It uses ELECTRICITY. I know my Delmarva Power has not gone done any, why would I add a car that needs to be plugged in to that bill? Another thought, how much does it cost to replace the Volt 'battery'. I'm sure that is not cheap!

GEEE I wonder why, Oh thats right that is becasue the Volt isn't even in America anymore you dumb asses... It has been moved to China, YES VOLT HAS BEEN MOVED TO CHINA... YES EVEN AFTER THE BAIL OUT...

it doesn't matter

the people responsible have all gotten rich off this scam

they've folded up their tents and have moved on to natural gas

you'll be seeing the same crooks pushing govt money on the same automakers to roll our natural gas fueled vehicles

they'll make even more and those cars won't sell either because when demand for NG goes up, so does the price.

it's all a game and the middle class lost about four years ago

Green always comes with a large price tag. What gets me is that if these green products were truly viable, it wouldn't take millions of our tax dollars to fund. The Obama administration should be held accountable for the hundreds of millions if not billions of dollars wasted on green scams. Impeach and Imprison.
