In an ideal world that would be a great idea, however I guess we have to weigh the liabilities. If someone got hurt, next thing you know, lawsuits. They would all probably hurt their back or something.

Sure. Why not put them all to work. Give them something to do.

Of course!

yes

Absolutley, postively. Should be mandatory thru out the country. Many would be glad to get outside.

The Arizona sheriff has the right idea. Make them want to be out.

Yes.When they were released they would be better suited for a job.Nothing beats a daily routine.

I agree plus it will keep cost downs in the long run...make them work off their punishments.

Hard to do logistically. To have a half dozen cons picking up trash, you need to have several CO's making 50 grand a year watching them. It costs a small fortune to make that happen. Also, there are not that many non-violent offenders thar can br trusted for such a detail.

It would be better to have them make stop signs and the like from the prisons. The people on social assistance programs should be forced to do this type of work. Now there would me a savings!

12:58...only ONE Co is needed. Him and a .12 gauge can pretty much control even the toughest hard rock con's. I'll VOLUNTEER for THAT job. And so would a half dozen of my friends (all of us could put a slug through their head at 100 yds and the state would save money no matter what happens. We'd shoot lawyers, too, so there's no downside, either). HA!!

It's already done, and with great success. The program out of the Poplar Hill Pre-release Unit offers this to many civic and charitable organizations.

Listen all.I started working in the Md.Correctional System in March 1965 and and retired in Nov.1988. During that time the system had its own Dairy Farms, farmed acres of veggies, corn etc.All these products were used in the system to feed the inmatesand the inmates did the work. All of the outlying work camps supplied inmates to each county to work in state and county road details yearround.Inmates were assigned to Forest Crews supervised by Forest Rangers in clearing farm woods, garthering pine cones for seeds to reseed cutover land. The inmates were assigned to beach duty at assateague Island to clean the camping areas and trash maintence, building pavilions, etc. However one will never see those days again. The system worked then. Not like it is today.Give them a BIBLE and commissary. AMEN.

I'm not positive 1:26 but I think Maryland lisense plates are made in a prison, same with road signs.

I heard a man on a local radio talk show recently who used to work in the PA Prison system. He said not so long ago the prisons in PA ran a dairy operation and also raised animals for meat and had a processing plant. Prisioners did most of the labor. Then some institutional food company came in and "convinced" (campaign donations no doubt) officials what they were doing wasn't a good idea and to contract out the meat and dairy products. End of the dairy and the processing facility.
So see any attempt to try and make detention centers/prisons more self sustainable would be met with resistance though it is a good idea to have something for the inmates to do that is valuable to themselves.

they should have to work an 8 hr. day 5 days a week for minimum pay. if they have children; the money needs to go for child support every month. if they don't the money needs to go back to the state to pay for their keep.

there are plenty of jobs they can do both in and out of the confines of the prison. as far as suing and liability; this should NOT be allowed.

cut out cable t.v.; most magazines; cell phones; cigaretts; and any other perks. they are in prison; not the hyatt regency.

take a lesson from sheriff joe arpaio and do it right. it's not a place they should WANT to be. it's prison.

mandatory high school diploma. time to learn and read. counsel and give them a goal to get a job when they get out.

Instead of letting them lift weights all day and plot attacks on guards they should be worked 10 hours a day.

Bring back the chain gangs. If they are willing to do the crime then they should be willing to do the time and all that that entails whether that be scraping roadkill off the highway or planting flowers.

Anonymous said...

yes they should work off there hotel expenses.

Let Sheriff Joe from Arizona show them how to run a jail! Let them where pink!

Ray Wisniewski said...

Yes, we should let our imprisoned society do some work for their keep.

I would say yes to this and I also believe able bodied people getting welfare should be made to do public service as well.
