In a completely outrageous editorial the Daily Times has suggested that the City Council should become a five-district body in order to avoid litigation by the ACLU and NAACP if the Council does not defer to them by dancing to their redistricting tune. The editorial also makes ridiculous remarks that the further division of the City Council is appropriate. It excoriates the Council for not having done redistricting sooner but does not mention that Mr. Ireton withheld the latest census data for some months.
Anyone who has followed events with an open mind can see that the Council majority members have worked long and hard to arrive at a fair and balanced plan, despite the incessant and continuing grandstanding and whining by Ireton, the groups mentioned above and their sycophants on the Council as well as the Daily Times.
The editorial does contain a very significant comment in its conclusion: "Come on, Salisbury, we can do better than this." If applied to the Daily Times, that sentiment is completely correct.

I'll second that -- an all at-large council makes for the best members and avoids those such a Shanie "my district" Shields.
There are folks of color who would make good members, but they can't win in a "minority-majority" district because they would have to play the race card to get elected. We have seen that in the larger district, No. 2, a qualified black can be elected.
It's time to drop these special districts and go back to one "at-large" citywide district.
Those groups -- ACLU and NAACP -- will probably want to have more than 5 mayoral districts before long.
Since the president got in,this racist talk has gone crazy!
And the racist talk will continue, thanks to BHO's resurrecting the issue at every opportunity. Until he's gone, it's a given.
Any group, no matter what race they represent, can get a candidate elected in any district as they exist in Salisbury. Voter education and turn out is key. The extreamly low number of votes cast in any Salisbury city election compared to the number of "Registered" voters indicates that most residents are not involved and just do not care. The ACLU, NAACP and any other interest group would serve their constituents much more effectively by educating them and turning out the vote rather than utilizing time and resources in the courts. The ingnorance of the average citizen of the issues and the processes of government just plays into the hands of elected officials, the parties, and the special interest groups that claim to be working in the best interest of the individual citizen.
The NAACP is a racist organization the people need to stop being afraid and stand up and fight.
White people are being targeted and assaulted by blacks at a growing rate you better wake up.
I will form my own NAACP. It will stand for National Association of Caucasian People. With enough members we will get a non profit exemption from the IRS. If there are enough people out there interested, please comment on this post.
4:54 has it right. I watched the election meetings on PAC14. The council president seemed well-read. The decision seem based on what is good for the city and fair to minorities.
I cannot understand what the fuss is.
I like that I got to watch things on PAC14. The Daily Times is too biased and inaccurate. I like to see and think for myself.
7:02 I'am in. Where do I sign up?
Don't read the Times. Why the heck would the NAACP and ACLU threaten litigation? The council, if I heard coreect, opened another seat possible for minorities.
People have just gone nuts. If they don't get their way, they just sue.
