I have a friend who likes to reward horrible restaurant service and food by leaving two pennies as a tip, but I've never known him to not pay the bill. However, one Colorado couple is telling their local Outback Steakhouse that the meal was so bad, the eatery should not be expecting a payment anytime soon.

You order from a menu you are entering into a contract to purchase the item(s) and are thus obligated to pay. It would definitely be worth talking to the manager as there is often wide latitude in comping meals. If, after a non threatening discussion, there is no consideration given, explain, while paying, why not only will you not be back, but how you will recommend everyone who chooses to listen should avoid the place.
As for the tip, the intent is to reward the server for quality service and should be judged on its own merit regardless of the quality of the food or the establishment.
That would be stealing if you ate the meal. My girlfriend has waitressed for years since in high school and would tell me stories about how people would eat 3/4 of their meal and then complain to get it comped or to get extra food for free. If YOU EAT IT PAY FOR IT. Also, the waitress/waiter doesn't cook your food so if they do their job then they should receive a tip worthy or their hard work not a reflection of the food. Your firend that leaves two pennies is a cheapskate....
I think if they ate most or all of the meal then they should pay for it and as the first commenter said don't go back. I've seen it time and time again where someone finishes the meal and only then has a million complaints about it.
My husband and I eat out a lot. I have been to 99% of the restaurants in and around Salisbury. I find most are not the same meal I had last week or last month. Some prime rib is just perfect and two weeks later no taste and cant cut it lot alone chew it. I brought what was left to make a pot of soup. It wouldnt event cook up?? So I dont go there anymore. It seems the chefs in Salisbury change really fast so how can they offer the same food today as they did last week.
There are certain restaurants I go for certain food. Cant get everything all the time at one restaurant.
I can say where I can go and get anything that is fresh, prepared correctly and served with a smile. That place is Legacy.
I pay even for bad food but I do tip the wait staff..but I dont go back. I dont say anything I just do not return.

I have to agree with you. There are some restaurants in this area we will not go to at all. Yet when we are visiting family in other parts of Maryland that same chain restaurant is great. I don't understand.
Legacy's is a GREAT place. Anyone that has not tried them is surely missing a great meal.
Never send food back! That is a BIG insult to the cook and you will involuntary get extra inside the food. Cough cough,,chilis cough cough
I agree with 11:36 am regarding the tip. That should always be determined by the service you get, not by the food quality. That's a seperate issue to be taken up with the manager or cook. Never send food back, unless you want to eat the cooks anger. If it's bad food, I pay and I leave, always. No secound chances from me.
as a waitress, I have to say that this is very rude. The cooks prepare the food. If something is wrong, let them try to correct it before expecting a free meal. most places will do most anything to make the customer happy. if your server is willing to find a solution to the problem, they deserve the 20% tip. we only make about 3.50/hr. give us a break, we have families to raise and bills to pay too. it is not our fault the cooks arent doing their job correctly. let us fix it and show you we deserve the tip.
its a civil matter technically.you couyldeat all you want and then not pay for it. they may call the police and the cops may huff and puff some threats but can not arrest you.they can only arrest you if you dine and dash.when you complain it becomes civil.im not saying to do this or its right but.......
Yeah,but I bet none of the above were so dissapointed that they swore off of eating out.I can just hear the average woman say "I'm so mad I'm going to cook everything at home from now on".Take a cooking class & show up the resataurants.Put your little Betty Crocker apron on & get to work.Make your family sorry they ever wanted to eat anywhere but home.Yeah,right.
If it tastes like crap, send it back. Order something else, talk to a manager or just walk out after explaining.
You cannot be forced to pay if it is inedible. Most good restaurants do not want the bad experience to go public and spread.
More than likely they will make it good and try to make you happy. But please be courteous, calm, and don't make a scene.
They want you happy so you will return.
