The Senate Budget and Taxation Committee heard testimony Wednesday on a proposed tax hike on cigars and smokeless tobacco products that could reach as high as 95%, but would exempt premium cigars. If passed, Maryland would have the highest tax rates on non-premium cigars and smokeless tobacco in the U.S., according to the Cigar Association of America.

That's just going to cause more people to buy smokes in Virginia or Delaware. It won't matter how much gas costs because niether state is that far away.
Good, let's make it impossible for our teenagers to afford to buy all the candy flavored stuff. Then, when they are older (and realize that they are not bulletproof), and they want to enjoy an occasional premium cigar, fine that is on them.
With all the money that is given to teacher salaries, you would think there would be something left over to educate kids about the perils of smoking.
They can go to VA or DE and get them cheaper. If someone wants to smoke they are going to go find somethig to smoke. Teens included. This is just going to hurt Marylands tabacco sales, not hinder those who smoke from using it...once again our gov't hard at work worrying about "keeping us safe" and not worrying about how much money they continue to dish out.
It should be up to the parents to teach the kids about not smoking, NOT THE GOVERNMENT!
Again, In Maryland, others are being penalized because the GOVERNMENT decided they wanted to protect a certain group of people, from THEMSELVES!
I'm so glad I no longer live in MD!
Hey folks, it's not about the kids it's about revenue. This POS Communist governor that we have in MD is taxing us and adding fees at an alarming rate. He's more worried about gay marriage and Baltimore City than he is about the hardships facing hard working Marylanders every day. He should be impeached.
I just googled and found that Virginia sells almost 550 million packs of cigarettes a year. Maryland sells almost 2 million a year. The revenue Maryland gets is 2 dollars a pack so they make 400 million dollars a year on cigarettes. Virginia collects 30 cents per pack and makes about 165 million a year in Revenue. How of that 550 million packs are being bought by people in Maryland.
oops that should be 200 million not 2 million
When Md cigars shops close how much additional income will be coming in?
How much money do O'malley need the teachers can't educate correctly because they have a small budget and makes about nothing. when I see teachers they say they make about 400 dollars a week and most of them can't live off it very well because the tax is going up and now their might be something similar to the boston tea party and I'm not saying smoking is bad but the government keeps raising taxes right then they barely pay the teachers and gives them a budget for the year which causes more problems like now to just get out of the city we have to have the special buses.
