WBOC Says Business Is Up 7%

There's just not enough room on this Blog to put all of the For Sale and For Lease Signs up throughout Salisbury but one thing is for sure, Craig Jahelka, (photo below) at WBOC is flat out clueless making statements the Eastern Shore is doing well and even better than last year.

Unfortunately, I just took the above business images minutes ago showing two more businesses closing their doors. From what I could see, the Bike Shop is already gone, unfortunately.

Look, if you want to consider WBOC Delmarva's News Leader, well, you go right ahead. In my opinion they're clueless at the top. It's a shame to see this happening in Salisbury but it is reality.

Bikesport will reopen in the spring in a different location. Overhead and the internet have hurt us to the point of closing. We are looking at a smaller location to move forward.

In similar yet at the same time unrelated news, I saw today where yet another business is leaving downtown. The Velvet Pearl is moving to seagull square.

Joe - you are absolutely correct in your observation about WBOC's executive, Craig Jahelka - being off base.

The media mogel has lost his marbles.

SBYnews have been tabulating each and every one of these business closures and I'll be sure and update our list with the latest two casualties.

I guess they - (WBOC & The Daily Times) - will make the accusation that we are making this stuff up to.

The list of now defunct local businesses is approaching close to 100. Some of these businesses were quite large employers.

Beezer, have you been as diligent with the list of new businesses opened? There are always businesses opening and closing, but the only way to infer a useful statistic is to have both numbers and in regards to time. 100 businesses closed in a year? Or ten? That matters.

You guys have to step up your reporting, you won;t be the leaders if you don't hold yourself to a higher standard.

And very happy that BikeSport is sticking around. I don't go there often, maybe once a year max, but they are top-notch and know their stuff. When something is wrong with my bike, that's where I go.

maybe if Christians rode bikes more and Bicyclists prayed

But - what about new businesses opening. That needs to be factored into the relm also. If a business closes that had 8 employees and a new business opens that employees 16 - the labor force goes up. To be fair you need to count businesses that closed in the last year - 2 years - 5 years, what ever, and than count new businesses during the same time frame. Lost jobs vs new jobs. Businesses moving vs businesses closing. It is no secret that polls, percentages, numbers can be manipulated to serve whatever one wants us to believe.

The POINT here, (while I agree about new businesses opening) is that Craig Jahelka is stating business is UP in Salisbury/eastern shore. On my way back from the Council Work Session tonight I was blown away at yet ANOTHER business that must have pulled a midnight madness move on the Plaza. There was a new store that sold larger womens clothes and when I walked past their window tonight EVERYTHING was gone!

The new stores that have opened are also closing, including Checkers next to the Christian store on 13.

As I stated last week, don't piss on my head and tell me its raining. Not ONE of you can provide a full list of new stores and with all due respect, unless you can come back here doing so, shut up. You'll argue just about anything. You want some respect, send in a comment showing ALL of the new stores in the past 6 months, I can think of one, the new craft store in the old Super Giant up north. Heck, even Pani Pit Pizza closed their doors.

We'll await your reply with that list.

The last time that I was in Salisbury I tried to go to Pani pit but they were closed. Their pizza is great. I am hoping they are still in business.

Coldstone closed too! The owner just up and left because its not busy. Unless corporate comes in it will remain shut down.

Bloomie's is gone???? But that's the showcase business the Mayor talks about all the time to show success downtown.

Is Bloomie's the Mayor's Solyndra????

There is more to running a business than just opening the doors and a lot of these business owners forget that. You need to advertise, I don't care where, but you need to tell people who you are, where you are, and what you do. When is the last time any one of you saw an ad for Bike Sport or the Religious store? When times get tough business owners look to pull the plug on advertising because they see it as an expense and not an investment. So instead of business getting better it gets worse. Why you ask? Well because you're not telling people the above questions so they go else where and spend their money. This is especially true for places that are more out of the way than others.
