No he shouldn't be fired unless he makes these remarks to students frequently. He should think before he speaks and show sensitivity to situations where remarks like that lower his students self esteem.
If he meant it to be an a**hole then absolutely but if it was an honest mistake and he meant it as a joke then no he should not be fired. It would be a hard thing to determine if I didn't actually hear how the teacher made the statement. It goes back to the old saying, "It's not what you say, it's how you say it."

Verbal abuse and public humiliation is ok with you?
It begs to question if this student has had multiple excuses for not having his homework.
perhaps sent to sensitivity training. reprimanded - yes. fired? if this was a first offense, no. if he's been an a$$hole before then let him go.

We had teachers ask sometimes "did the dog eat your homework"?
If the kid didn't have his homework, that is the bottom line. It shouldn't matter what the question was of why.

I would imagine with kids nowdays, it takes quite a bit to get answers (or excuses) out of them, many of which you probably can't believe.

Kids these days seem to have very little hardness to them. Most I would consider are pansies. Oh my, somebody hurt my feelings. Give me a break.

Give the kid an F if he doesn't do his work. But when the teacher made that abusive remark, the kid should have punched the teacher in the face and said, eat that, BITCH! One shouldn't have to tolerate a bully just because he happens to be a teacher!
A teacher just don't wake up one morning, well it's pick on chubby day. There may be a history of no home work here. The kid sounds like he guilty as charged.

Yes REALLY. And no I'm not a parent of an overweight kid. There are some of us against bullying and abuse. You and others who think this is ok is part of the problem.
This is no way for a PROFESSIONAL teacher to act. So that infers he/she is not. And neither are the ones who agree with it.
A school is a place to learn. I guess he learned authority figures and supposedly role models can belittle him and it's ok.
Small minds will of course agree as you and others have shown. Good job.

School is tough enough dealing with other students and all the BS but when a teacher crosses this line and turns into a tormentor he should be fired. Had this been my child I would have driven to the school and punched him in the face.

Actually, I maintained a 3.8 grade average and got along with my teachers and fellow students very well. I just never had an ounce of tolerance for bullies! About 20 years ago there was a 15 y/o kid on the eastern shore who was beaten up and had his money taken everyday at school by another kid. He went through the proper channels to no avail. The thug just beat him worse for reporting him. One day the victim brought a pistol to school and when the bully jumped him, he blew his fu*&(&# brains out. He went to jail for murder, but the bully got what he so richly deserved! I have always thought the victim did the admirable thing. I am considered nice and considerate to all, but I would rather die fighting or go to jail than be bullied.
In short ,12:00, while you may be content to shrink from aggression and ridicule, I choose to confront it with a preemptory vengeance.

Seriously? I have NO idea why anyone would choose to be a teacher in this crazy world of political correctness!! Maybe he was playing off of the old excuse, "The dog ate my homework." Then we have people like Mr. Littleton who think it's OK for a student to punch a teacher!! If a teacher so much as pats a student on the back, he could not only be fired but possibly have charges of assault brought against him or her!!!! Quit with the "Let's not offend anyone" bulls**t!!!! Obviously the kid did NOT do his homework which to me is a a more important thing to worry about!!!
Before firing the teacher, the school system authorities and we would need to know several things, most of which have been alluded to in the comments. What is the relationship between the student and the teacher? Are they comfortable with kidding each other? How old is the student? Does the teacher have a record of complaints about him? Yes, his remark certainly appears to be insensitive, but we need to know the context in which it was said. And, no, the teacher should not be fired. He might be given a three-day suspension and a notation on his record, but firing seems over the top unless, of course, this is the latest example of such insensitivity, and his previous infractions are on file.

OMG when I was in school way back when I recall hearing a teacher ask a student if his parents were brother and sister due to his grades. He said that had to be the only explanation. That teacher was at WiHi.

Completely inappropriate. I don't think he should be fired, but take bullying classes, have the child switch teachers, and take away some of his sick or vacation time.

It is funny that teachers say things to children that they would never say to an adult. The teacher is a bully, pure and simple.
And the end of the year when the lazy kid fails, every body complains the teacher didn't do his/her job.
Any body willing to go thru what teachers go thru are not kid haters. Some times tuff love is not what the kid wants to hear.

"Sensitivity training"? "Verbal abuse"? "Student's self-esteem"? Give me a break. Some of you people wouldn't have lasted 10 minutes at the schools I attended.
