While the County furloughs employees, cries the blues that there's just no money to pay for services, County Executive Rick Pollitt proposed full time and part time employees over 20 hours a $200.00 Christmas Bonus.
Folks, that's more than $123,000.00 worth of free money being thrown around to some 600 County Employees. Of course your County Council immediately stopped this proposal before it ever saw the light of day.
Mind you, rather than creating another Post I thought I'd tie another thing into this article. SINCE WHEN IS BLACK FRIDAY A HOLIDAY?
You, the taxpayers, paid each and every County Employee to be off on Friday. I don't care what any one says, this is complete BS. Are you telling me people couldn't be productive on Friday? The County already pays each employee to be off on their BIRTHDAY, which is yet another crock of BS. GROW UP! This accounts for a TON of money. Nowhere in my lifetime have I ever seen such crap.
These Democratic leaders are crying the blues as to why this Country/County is so broke. OPEN YOUR DAMN EYES and see the light. The accountability starts at the TOP.
I want to thank the County Council for actually looking into these issues and in some cases stopping such ridiculous practices before they ever see the light of day. My God, times are tough on just about every one and it's about time something get done about it.

This will be the last Christmas we spend in our home, cant stop it anymore. Live with that everyday.
They have been robbing us taxpayers for years! About time something is done about it!
Maybe some people need to quit complaining about government employees, if Ur so Damn concerned Joe go run for office
rick still has mark whitlock running the landfill! mark was one of the main thieves at the landfill! beleive me joe! not breaking news there!
Now just why would a so called County Executive have a thief running the landfill? Makes perfect sense to me (yeah, right). Not much of an Executive if he can't make a decision to get rid of a thief in my opinion. There are way too many honest people that need a job but yet Rick keeps a thief there - explain please.
Rick Pollitt lol..he knows nothing at all about MANANGING or MAKING MONEY! mommy and daddy took care of him. lmao. clueless in eden. although rick would rather say! cluless in ALLEN! LMAO AGAIN!
State employees also have the Friday after Thanksgiving off. It's called American Heritage Day. It was offically passed as a holiday two or three years ago.
is there anyone in our local goverment that acttually knows how to run a buisness or how to make money??...besides joe holloway!
Thank God for the county council!
Thats what I've always said about the tax cap -it's just more money for Pollitt to waste!
Please tell me this is a joke. The money isn't Rick's nor anyone else's to give away. It belongs to the taxpayers. Good grief!
I think about Rick every time I ride on Glen Ave by the Civic Center, here is this nice brand new parking lot but the road going by it is riddled with pot holes, they could have at least used some of the left over black top to fill some of the holes on Glen Ave.
1:02, perfectly said!!
Okay, first of all, the county follows the same holidays as the rest of most other government agencies. They took Columbus day, which the State gets, and used the day after Thanksgiving because there were so many employees off that it made sense to shut things down that day. Secondly, MANY private businesses give some sort of Christmas bonus. All of you say to treat the county like a business, but you want to pick and choose what aspects should be like private enterprise. I personally think that the county employees deserve something. They have endured furlough days for the last several years yet continue to perform and do their jobs in spite of reductions in personnel and performing heavier work loads. I am a County employee. This news regarding a bonus is news to me, but I would expect nothing less of this Council. I really don't care, it is just another example of how clueless the current council is to what county employees actually do. Quit crying about the birthday holiday Joe H. This was given to the employees 5 years ago because the employees weren't able to be given raises. The raise before that was a 1% raise. Since that time, they have receive three years worth of furlough days while they watched teachers get pay raises and not be affected. Let me state that I am not complaining, just stating some facts for you. Is it really THAT big of a deal?
Yes there is another businessman on the council...Bob Culver!
4:23pm-yes, it is that big of deal. I own a company and haven't been able to give rasies or bonuses since my profits are off. There have been times when I haven't even taken a paycheck but I have paid my taxes here in Wicomico County. Now Mr. Pollitt wants to take my taxdollars and give the county employees a bonus.
And, all this after I keep hearing the county is broke. Now, do you see the problem here?
Don't make me snap.
As I have said on many occasions -
"This is the best dang County Council I have ever witnessed in my entire lifetime on the easternshore".
Think about if for a moment. The depression era that we have been experiencing for the past 3 years - this County Council has had the intestinal fortitude to make the right decisions to try and thwart further government expansion. Granted - there are a few exceptions to the above equation - but by and large they have done a pretty good job - in my eyes - regarding their job performance.
CONGRATULATIONS - FOR A JOB WELL DONE.
I see a huge problem. The money is the taxpayers money.
4:23 pm no raises or steps at the BOE for the past three years. Take home pay is less than three years ago because of increased pension and healthcare costs. Still grateful to have a job.
5:54, Have you cut your employees pay for the last three years? I will bet when times were good, they got decent raises. I also noticed that you mentioned profits. That is where the problem is, as the county is a not for profit business. That is why you can't compare the county to private sector. BTW good job 4:23.
I don't know of any business that doesn't give their employees paid holidays. My business has two floating holidays. You people don't have enough real problems to complain about. Kwichyerbellyachin.
Black Friday is not a holiday. Both the City and County use to have Maryland Day as a holiday. This was celebrated in March. Both governments decided to eliminate Maryland Day and move that holiday to the day after T-Giving. This was due to so many employees taking the day after T-Giving. Have your facts correct prior to making acusations as Black Friday as a paid holiday....
that friday is American Indian Heritage Day a government approved holiday. and as far as bonuses and private businesses. the more money you put into peoples hands the more they spend in the private business sector, everything is a trickle down effect. you gotta give to get something and if no one is giving then no one is getting.
Joe, as a County employee, I would like to add to your post and all the comments above.
I am a firm believer in running our local government offices and services like a business would. There is far too much waste in our County government that gets over looked day after day and year after year. Here are my thoughts on the County's inefficiencies.
1. Employee performance reviews - the County does review its employees' performance, but that's as far as it goes-There are no adjustments either way. Job descriptions are not modified, salaries are not compensated (up or down) and workforce is not adjusted (until budget woes arise). The County needs to use those reviews to discover inefficiencies, promote a productive work environment and reward hard work. What happens when they don't praise those who work hard and punish those who strive to work as little as possible is those hard workers will become lazy because they see that there is no reward for overachieving and no penalty for slacking thus further promoting inefficiencies in our local government. I'll tell you this, there were certainly a few people that got laid off that worked way harder than those still working for the County.
2. Raises - No COLAs! Raises should not be given across the board just because you survived another year working the same exact job at the County. For example, if an employee is hired at $40K and retires after 25 years of service with a 3% COLA every year they will be making over $83K by the time they retire. There are actually people who just retired from the County who's job description DID NOT CHANGE OVER 25 YEARS!!! Don't you thing a few things changed since 1985?? Raises should be earn and not given! I work hard every day and go above and beyond my job description, but I've yet to see a raise since I've been with the County. Do I deserve a raise? I think so, but I'm happier to simply have a job. But if the County ran like a business then I, and others like me, could receive a raise despite poor economic conditions.
3. Holidays - Black Friday and the Birthday holidays are absolute BS! If you want those days off then use your vacation time. Again, most businesses don't do this, why should the County be an exception?
4. Budget surplus - since the executive form of government has been in place and Pollitt has been in office, a budget surplus has become nearly non-existent! The economy is partially to blame; however, our government leaders have the 'if we have it we must spend it' mentality. Now we've hit times like this and our reserves are blown. Coupled with over paid staff, surplus workforce and the incredible ability to pay entirely too much on frivolous project, we get put into a severe budget jam. = And this week Pollitt discovered that there is a POSSIBILITY of a budget surplus and wanted to hand out bonuses? Money just burns a hole in his pocket! I don't even want his $200 if its going to cost me my job when budget cuts come again next year. Businesses don't operate with a zero budget, why should the County? SAVE MONEY RICK!
Again, this is coming from a County employee and I still think it's crap! I truly see the big picture and I don't perceive myself as a "whiny County employee." Honestly, if I had the personal funds, the time and didn't fear getting fired I would run for County Executive. I'd even donate the difference between my current salary and the $85K executive salary back to the County but the County is so screwed up that it's apparently not "allowed."
