25% Of Millionaires Pay Lower Tax Rates Than Many Middle-Class Americans, Study Says

Roughly 25 percent of American millionaires pay a lower tax rate than millions of middle class earners, according to a new study by the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service.

According to the report, which was based on 2006 data, about a quarter of millionaires (about 94,500) paid less than 26.5 percent of their income in federal taxes, while about 10 percent of moderate-income taxpayers (about 10.4 million taxpayers) paid more than 26.5 percent in taxes. Moderate-income taxpayers were defined as those with an adjusted gross income less than $100,000.

I agree with Michelle Bachmann: Let's go back to the tax policies and tax rates of the Reagan presidency.

The 10% of moderate income people that paid more than 26.5% in taxes did so because they failed to consult an accountant and or tax attorney. With an income in excess of $175,000/yr., I have not paid more 15% in taxes in over 15 years with the help of a good accountant and financial plan. Do as the rich and become richer. Democrats have been supporting Democratic candidates for 50+ years and they are still poor.

we need to stop reading "a lower rate". 30% of $20 million is $600,000 in taxes. IF a person making $75,000/year pays 100% in taxes, it still takes 8 years for him to pay what the first guy's $600,000. how is this fair for the first guy? does he use more public assistance? most likely not. does he use public services more? most likely not. so why would he have to pay more for services he wouldnt use as much?

if i go out and work harder, makes better contacts, and promote myself in an effort to better myself, i get punished by giving the government more of my money.

cain is on the right track for "fairness" whereas everyone pays the same RATE. however, i dont think that goes fair enough for fairness. everyone should pay the same flat amount.

i tell ya, a flat amount would zero in on a budget number a lot easier too.

I started to respond to 8:57, but then shook my head and realized you can't argue with such logic. It's a waste of time to even try. As my mother used to say, you can't have a battle of wits with an unarmed opponent.

if you go out here and work under the table 3/4 of the year you will be in a low bracket and get the earned income credit and collect more than you pay in. it makes me mad but a lot of people are playing this game.

tell me why i should pay more (or less) than ANYONE else in this country? i shouldnt. EQUAL rights never seem to be EQUAL.

I think 8:57 is onto something. Lets reward those who actually work hard. Let's pay the solider more money since they are in 100 plus degree weather. Let's also pay the people like the builders, electricians and plumbers more money as well. We will pay doctors less since they do not actually work harder that the ones I just mentioned. Without builders, electricians and plumbers the doctors and accountants couldn't do their jobs. I would like to pay less in taxes also. I don't drive hardly at all during the week so I want to pay less since I wont be using the roads as much as others. I would also like to pay less in taxes since I have no children in the school system. Does this sound ok with everyone?

The other 75% don't have the financial wherewithall to provide actual jobs. While that 75% feel like the rich/poor disparity is widening, the top 25% are the only true hope they have.Love em or hate em,the wealthy control the economy and the well being of everyone else.I'll admit it's not an easy pill to swallow, but the mega wealthy did not get that way by mistake.

11:59, most people on here will think you are serious.

12:41:For whatever reason, most people automatically think that the rich don't work hard. They think that when millions fell from the sky, they were fortunate enough to be standing under it with a basket.I don't personally know many truly wealthy people, but those who I do know worked their ass off for their money.
