University Of Maryland Eastern Shore Report

Is this why Thelma Thompson is no longer president of UMES?

20 page audit reports are never good and it looks like no one was watching the shop at UMES.

From the cover letter, “UMES did not exercise adequate controls over student financial aid transactions, which totaled $44.5 million during fiscal year 2010.”

If you don’t want to read the whole report, just read the executive summary on pages 5-6.

A single employee had authority to award $545,000 in student grants. No documentation was maintained on the grants. No policy was in place to determine who got grants. And, of course, the employee awarded one of the grants to a relative.

It’s also interesting that the Chancellor of the UMD responded to the audit, rather than the UMES president.

Below is a link to the Office of Legislative Audits’ report dated August 29, 2011 covering the audit of the University System of Maryland – University of Maryland Eastern Shore.  This report is available to the public on September 7, 2011.

say it aint so? UMES Coruption? Really? It took this long to figure it out...

No wonder we are dumbing down our nation, look at graduates coming out of the college they could not pass high school. Wor-Wic puts out better education than UMES

Check the other set of books they keep and you'll find the real truth.
fire all relatives and you will only have about 100 employees left to worry about.
keep digging, you hair will turn white.

Like 1:09, I am not surprised. I have thought for years that UMES ran a very"loose ship" in a number of ways, just not financial. For example, I had a number of student teachers from there who did not know how to do a lesson plan; it was not required of the education department. Hopefully, the Chancellor of the University system and whoever else in authority at the University system will be on top of this. I am also aware of the validity of 1:23's statement, at least as far as the nepotism issue is concerned.

This institution is strickly dedicated to the Afican American people. When they graduate they go from UMES to ECI to further their education. See what they teach their students , I'm one of them.

UMES is an institution DEDICATED to giving black people degrees regardless of their ability or intelligence. A scholastic gimme at the taxpayers expense. see if anyone gets in trouble for basically stealing (AND lying and cheating). I doubt it. Like 1:59 said, they get accounting/business degrees and couldn't balance a checkbook or write a basic business plan. Their writing skills are 8th grade level and many have criminal records. Telling employers you have a degree from that place is tantamount to employment suicide. Unless you are applying to Shore-Up or a government agency, you are waaaaay down on the list of people scheduled for a second interview. Sorry if the truth stings, but dat be da facts (in the venacular).

"..(in the venacular)."

Interesting choice of words for no apparent reason, huh. I love how all of these Anon voices come on here and claim to know something they really don't. I would almost bet most didn't even read the Audit.

I love how the other Anon claim to even know a UMES student (much less spent time down there)or dealt with one.

It is funny in a sad kind of way really.

Surprise Surprise!! UMES is exactly what 3:44 said it is. The WASTE of taxpayer money is criminal at best. Ask some of the employees what their job entails. THEY DON'T HAVE A CLUE!!!! Pushing papers around and then sending them to the next desk, so the next unnecessary employee can push them around again, is status quo. Of course that's only when they are actually at their desks. Most of the time they are in State cars going to State seminars for what amounts to a big crock of doodoo at our expense!! If you ever want to ask a UMES employee a question, don't call between 11 and 2 because they will be at lunch, IF they showed up for work in the first place. I say close the doors. Total waste of space and money.

UMES and Salisbury University should merge into one institution, SU wants more blacks to get more money from the state for a more diverse university and UMES wants more whites, so their graduation rates can get above 50%, it's a win win solution.

You've got it, 4:36! 4:02, I DO know, or have known, a good number of UMES students or graduates. I must say that most are simply way below the expectations that we have for "college material." As a retired teacher, I have seen many of my students go to UMES. Some of them have earned their degree by hard work and are certainly entitled to hold the degree they do. Others have gone there who cannot write an error-free sentence. UMES, with some exceptions (such as the physical therapy program) leaves much to be desired!

5:35, you may remember that there was a great deal of talk about bringing UMES and SU together and ultimately closing UMES. That plan didn't materialize; instead, the state started to add more buildings to the UMES campus as well as many more students to the school population. There really isn't any need to have two universities within 12 miles of each other in this essentially rural area.

As a current UMES student, I am a little offended by some of the remarks made regarding the low intelligence of the students. I, for one, graduated Magna Cum Laude from high school, so intelligence is not really an issue for me. Furthermore, I will be graduation from this university (with honors) in May. I know how to properly structure a sentence free of grammatical errors and I have never had a speeding ticket, much less a conviction! Although I agree with most about the ridiculous administration, (or lack thereof), I have received an excellent education here. As an English major, I have had some top-notch professors. (Who, by the way, are predominately WHITE!)The problem with UMES does not lie within the education, but the administration. This just based on my experience here.

I used to work at UMES. I was given a document from H.R. to send letters to everyone who was working at the school currently, I knew for a fact that one of the people listed had previously been fired from the school but was still on the books 6 months later.

10:58, since much of your statement is in respnse to mine, let me congratulate you on your achievements. I certainly hope that it did not appear that I was painting all students with one brush. I could only speak from my experience. I did teach English, and, almost without exception, those UMES students who did their student teaching with me were lacking in many skills necessary to be successful teachers, including basic English skills. I hope that, by now, there is a lesson plan model; there was not then. There are students such as yourself who will succeed no matter what. Your take on administration is "right on" from what I understand. Best wishes for a successful future!

UMES doesn't corner the market on uneducated/untrained graduates. Where I work, a lot of management trainees come from large universities outside the area...one out of ten might have the "right stuff" be that intelligence or drive to succeed.

UMES is a joke and pushes kids through, I got a degree from both Salisbury University and UMES. I have never recommended UMES since going there, was a very negative experience.

4:02...I am not "anonymous" and I HAVE not only known UMES students, but have interviewed them. Their education is poor, as are their skills. I also did a job fair there once. Thats was enough to convince me that the money spent soliciting job candidates was not worth the return. Not to say there aren't SOME students who excel, just that they are few and far between. It's an EASY school to attend with EASY classes. And EASY to get good grades in....

"I will be graduation from this university (with honors) in May"

Wow. If you can write that poorly and get honors, UMES really is a joke.
