Should the post office scale back its delivery schedule to just five days?

If they make stamps 50 cents, and stop delivery on the weekends and stop allowing the damn people to drive company vehicles around as if they owned them...


It would save a lot just in those few areas...

If the police did that to, far as no driving cop cars home when off duty would save gas, wear and tear and to be serviced less...

most of the mail i get is junk mail. eliminate saturday delivery. i know that five days a week would not hurt me a bit.

Given the very precarious financial straits the USPS finds itself in, going to five days for delivery is almost a necessity. 11:09 is right, what would we be losing? It's not as if we receive bills in the mail that need immediate payment. We could easily do with five days.

5 days a week works for me. I am assuming pay would be reduced to reflect 5 days worked instead of 6!

Works for me. The only thing I get is junk mail flyers for places that I don't shop and the occasional tax bill. Want to go Green? Eliminate the post office b/c all I do is either throw away or burn 90% of what is delivered.

Today's volume of mail includes too much of what the USPS loses money on (i.e., junk mail). If this is done in conjunction with a 1st class delivery, it is profitable. If a delivery stop is made solely for the junk mail, the USPS is paid only 1/2 what they charge for 1st class. Simply eliminating a day of delivery just accumulates a larger volume for each of the remaining 5 days.

If they would stop doing what they lose money on, the volume would go down and they just may end up not needing 6 days to deliver it.

hey they only deliver bread 5 days a week and we survive with that!! if it saves money and me having to walk to the mailbox for junk go for it!!

Monday, Wed, and Friday would be perfectly fine. I dont get much but junk mail or mail for the people who used to live in my house anyway.

If the USPS was eficiently run(or run by private enterprise)they would have gone to 5 day delivery ten years ago.

No one here realizes the volume of jobs lost by going to a 5 day work week. And no, it will not reflect the less day because more hours will be required on Monday and Tuesday, to process the mail from the lost day. The mail never stops moving so more will be piled up to process when it resumes. All the five day work week will do is cause all substitute carriers (like myself) to lose their jobs. The regular (fulltime) carriers are already working more for less money due to loss in mail volume. Honestly .44 cents to send a letter to California is a bargain. The junk mail everyone has referred to, is the only thing keeping the post office afloat. The Post Office is trying to revamp its parcel service that it so foolishly gave to fed ex and UPS years ago. Parcel delivery is the only way the Post Office is going to survive. They need to develope a system to gain parcel delivery back ASAP.

USPS went to great lengths to justify 44 cents as enough to justify delivering 1st class mail. How can half that cover the delivery of Standard (junk)? It did make sense when this was incremental revenue for a 1st class delivery that was being made anyway. With Standard Mail rates being nearly half that of 1st Class, how can it possibly keep the USPS "afloat"?

Yes, the parcel business is where the money is. Problem is that, without massive investment in the USPS fleet, there's no capacity for it. Secondly, you just can't take it away from private enterprise. You have to earn that business from the Public.That would take even more money that USPS doesn't have. They are stuck.

PS: I was a former substitute rural mail carrier. I will never forget the Postmaster coming out to my route to gas me up with a gas can made prior to 1971. The nozzle would not fit in the vehicle.

As time goes on we out grow things re: Pony Express for one, newspapers, 45rpm records, etc. We need to get rid of the postal department. Most people have direct deposit for social security checks, welfare etc. We can get our bills on line and pay online. If they cant afford what they are doing quit. We taxpayers have to quit when we cant afford something.

I've have seen the idiots in bivalve , tyaskin and nanticoke sitting on their butts too long.

Yes, I wrote this suggestion about 20 years ago and, of course, it was rejected. Even back then my mail on Saturday's was almost completely junk, or none at all, with only occasional few first class items. If I am correct based on my experience, there would not be a huge volume to be handled on Monday.

I agree with the Mon, Wed and Fri scenario. Would take about a week to get indoctrinated. As for the police and their cars, I would bet if something happened to that poster and an off duty heard a call and responded quickly, he/she would think differently

The smaller offices do need to be closed. They already moved Fruitland delivery to Salisbury back in May. This was a great idea but Fruitland still has a Postmaster, and utilities, and whatever other operating expenses. So what did moving delivery to Salisbury solve? Nothing, they now have to pay the Fruitland routes a little more to start out in Salisbury. That in my opinion is not closing an office it has caused more expenses. I guess it was the first step in phasing the office out, so when Postmaster retires (whenever that is) they can close the office. They also moved Bishopville, into the Berlin office.

When the Easton processing center opened everything changed. At the Berlin PO there was a slot for local mail. So, if I was sending a letter from Berlin to Berlin, it was taken care of right there. When Easton opened, a letter from Berlin is sent to Easton and then back to Berlin for delivery.
Now, I don't have a MBA but I don't need one to realize that that just does NOT make sense. No wonder the USPS is losing money!

privatize the whole thing
that flat rate shipping is a joke you can't track its slow they loose stuff
lets stop subsidizing it and put it out for bid
they waste a lot of time money and resources hauling what amounts to trash

They need to stop paying all that $$$ for advertising. People will continue to use the USPS but not with fewer and stricter services and higher postage rates.

I like having cop cars parked in my neighborhood. It's more of a deterrent to crime. And if they get called out for a crime, their car is right there.

Police visibility is needed to reduce crime. And lord knows we need to reduce crime.
