"Don't Ask, Don't Tell" Consigned To History

(CBS/AP)

WASHINGTON - After years of debate and months of final preparations, the military can no longer prevent gays from serving openly in its ranks.

Repeal of a 1993 law that allowed gays to serve only so long as they kept their sexual orientation private took effect Tuesday at 12:01 a.m. EDT.

Some in Congress still oppose the change, but top Pentagon leaders have certified that it will not undermine the military's ability to recruit or to fight wars.

The Army was distributing a business-as-usual statement Tuesday saying simply, "The law is repealed," and reminding soldiers to treat each other fairly.

Another move by the obama admin.
to discredit the U.S..
The U. S. is now the only nation on earth to allow gays in the military.
I guess the whole world is wrong and we are right.
We were a nation of great might and wealth , obama has certainly changed that! How do you like the change now?
If you voted for him , don't advertise it! If you vote him again , please for Gods sake , keep it a secret.

FYI dumbass! We are not the only nation on earth that allows gays to openly serve. In fact most nations of NATO allow gays to serve openly, Israel does as well. Get your facts straight.

2:30 in case you haven't noticed, this is not a forum for intelligent discussion of the facts surrounding any issue.

Whatever sounds true and fits ones political ideaology goes.

2:22

25 (now 26) countries allow gays to serve openly in the armed forces, but why let facts get in the way.

FINALLY

I did make a mistake , there are 9% of the countries in the world that allow gays in the military.
So , having said that , there is a place for them , in the kitchen serving soldiers making their bunks and cleaning the barracks.
I might add , they can wash the dirty clothes.
Shame on me!

2:48, no it's called stupidity.

Nobody is disputing anyone's right to speak, only calling 2:22 out for being an idiot.

Telling how the anti gay people always resort to lies and exaggeration.

there have always been homosexuals in the warrior class throughout history
no big deal
people just never judged those that were protecting their behinds

Its clear you all are not grasping what some on here are trying to convey. Do what you must but don't force people to accept your behavior. If this is your path, fine, but don't expect me to except it. And advertising to all of us(people that don't except it)like I'm wrong is out of line. Gay or homosexual, what ever you want to call it today, is your baggage, not mine.

I don't see how it anyone's baggage at all. Soldiering is a job I could care less if they have lovers of either sex families children etc. just like I could care less about a plumber or electricians personal life as long as they do their job and I am paying.

9:17, I have no idea what you're trying to say, and it's just not all the grammatical problems (You want "accept" rather than "except," for example). So, now, I'm not grasping what you are trying to convey.

there is nothing to except of this soldiers other than they have volunteered to protect your liberties and theirs
you need not concern yourself with their personal lives what so ever
I'm sure their defending YOU is unconditional

It seems to me like the people who are always so anti gay are the first ones to be found at the rest stop.

What difference does it make if the soldier is gay or straight?
If they are willing to fight for those of us who are not gay and have chosen not to fight, then why not let them fight?
Not so long ago, the military would't let females do certain things either. I said then, if they're willing and able, then let them do it!
Now we have female soldiers who are contributing just as much as their male counterparts!

10:01...okay, I'll give you that one on the "one" word of my typing. Of course we're not talking about my typing ...and you still don't grasp the situation. I could care less what gays want as long as they don't shove it in our face to except it.
