Free Stuff

The folks who are getting the free stuff, don't like the folks who are paying for the freestuff,
Because the folks who are paying for the free stuff,
Can no longer afford to pay for both the free stuffand their own stuff,

And,
The folks who are paying for the free stuff,
Want the free stuffto stop.
and the the folks who are getting the free stuff,
Want even more free stuff on top of the free stuff they are already getting!

Now...  The people who are forcing the people who Pay for the freestuff,
Have told the people who are RECEIVING the free stuff,
That the people who are PAYING for the free stuff
Are being mean, prejudiced, and racist.

So... the people who are GETTING the free stuff,
Have been convinced they need to hate the people who are paying for the free stuff,
By the people who are forcing some people to pay for their free stuff,
And giving them the free stuff in the first place.

We have let the free stuff giving go on for so long that there are
Now more people getting free stuff than paying for the free stuff.

Now understand this. All great democracies have committed financial suicide
somewhere between 200 and 250 years after being founded.  The reason?
The voters figured out they could vote themselves money from the treasury by electing
people who promised to give them money from the treasury in exchange for electing them.

The United States officially became a Republic in 1776, 231 years ago. The number of people now
getting free stuffoutnumbers the people paying for the free stuff. We have one chance to change that
in 2012. Failure to change that spells the end of the United States as we know it.

Exactly. Time to end the free stuff like Social Security and Medicare. The biggest fiscal burden on our nation doesn't come from foreign aid, illegal immigrants, or welfare. It comes from programs that give money to seniors.

11:15, does the word elstupido ring in your ear from time to time. my little "young", ill-educated, ill-informed, inexperienced, wet behind the ears friend your ignorance is showing.

senior citizens PAID into the "system" most of their lives. the government would NOT allow them to invest elsewhere with this hard earned money. they promised them a certain amount of money would be available when they retired. this is a fact, so get over it.

this is nothing like all the "freebies" that are given to others that have NOT paid into the system and refuse to work. to those who are the baby factories and expect a hand out for the rest of their lives. to those who try to live on the "dole" whenever possible and don't intend to change. to those who are living here illegally.

there is a hugh difference here and i sure hope one day you get it.

"The voters figured out they could vote themselves free stuff from the treasury..."

Problem: The treasury has never contained any free stuff.

In order to give free stuff, those elected have to take stuff from those who earned it.
“Waaaaa, I want my free stuff,” the populace demands!

This country is doomed.

I agree the free stuff needs to end. However, Social Security is not "free stuff." I paid for it! The govt can stop Social Security any time they damn well please, But give me all the money I sunk into first. Some younger folks just don't get it. We paid for it thru a lifetime of working.

11:15, Seniors that have worked their whole life have earned their Social Security benefits. I take it you are not one of these people that work.

No, 11:38, I'm not the ignorant one. You seem pretty ignorant of just how Social Security works. Yes, you paid Social Security taxes while you worked. However, those taxes went to pay for the benefits of those already on the program. Your tax money wasn't saved for you. The Social Security you are getting today is paid for by my tax money (and, yes, 12:05, I work. In fact, I'm self-employed, so I pay quite a lot in Social Security and Medicare taxes).

Saying "I paid into the system so I deserve my government benefits" is a ridiculous argument. Paying taxes in the past doesn't entitle you to anything. I've paid taxes my entire working life. Am I entitled to whatever government services I want? No. You should get from the government what the government can afford to give. It can't afford to give you Social Security or Medicare.

The fact is, the government has a huge deficit. The projected deficit for the next few decades is also huge. The main causes of this deficit are Social Security and Medicare. That's a fact; just look it up. The government doesn't have the money to pay for Social Security and Medicare.

Yeah, the government promised old people that Social Security and Medicare would be around when they retired. The government doesn't have the money to pay for it, though. These were bad programs when they were proposed. People who paid into them were sold a bill of goods by the government. If we are ever going to fix our problems we have to realize this.

To 11:58 -- most Social Security recipients recoup the money they paid into the system within the first few years they are on the program, so I'd be fine with the deal you are proposing.

It's a simple fact that we can't afford the Social Security and Medicare system we have today. It is bankrupting our nation. However, if we are ever to fix this, all the people screaming about "baby factories" and illegal immigrants need to realize that government programs for these people aren't the cause of our fiscal problems -- it's Social Security and Medicare. Don't tell the government to cut spending and then scream when politicians propose cutting spending on the programs that are causing our deficit.

1:00,

Thank you. Good post.

One more thing about SS is that the government is so inept at managing anything that their administering of social security costs 3 or 4 times what it would cost a private company to manage your 401(k). It's not unlike the stories you hear where you give a dollar to a charitable organization, but only 20-cents ends up helping those who you want to help. In this case, a good chunk of our SSAN taxes are eaten up (read: Wasted) by bureaucratic bumblers.

1:00 pm, i'm going to say it again; we PAID into the government system ALL our working lives (44yrs.for me) and by the way i'm still paying taxes on my soc.sec. this is crazy. i'm now double taxed. and again; the government would not allow us to take this money and invest it ourselves. they not only took our money, they continued to spend the monies on everything else they "deemed important".

yes; the system needs to be tweeked, but stop saying we are receiving freebies. it's simply a lie. if you don't want your soc.sec. then by all means send it back if you're receiving it and tell them in advance if you're not.

I agree that the way the government designed the SS system was bad. I agree the government overspends. But it is a fact that the vast majority of people on SS are getting "freebies." They are receiving more money from the federal government than they paid into the system.

Again, just because you paid Social Security taxes doesn't mean that you are morally entitled to get Social Security. The taxes you paid were used to fund Social Security benefits at the time you paid the taxes. The taxes I'm paying now are funding your benefits. It's a "pay as you go" scheme, not an insurance program. The money you paid is gone. The government doesn't have the money to pay for the current benefits.

I'm not defending the system or the government. I think people got screwed. But you can't be a fiscal conservative and say "cut government spending" but resist efforts to cut Social Security and Medicare. These two programs are what are causing our budget deficit.
