In years past, the Salisbury Zoo has become a victim of heavy floods and lost animals during flooding. The Zoo animals are also subjected to being traumatized by being transferred.
There are many things to also worry about. You know how old those trees are at the Zoo. God Forbid one of those trees comes down during the storm, believe me, the wire on the Jaguar Exhibit will not hold up. Mind you, more than likely the Jags will remain indoors during the storm but the damage could be very severe.
There's little the Staff can do to save the animals and or the Zoo. They simply cross their fingers and hope it won't be as severe as it could be.

CRAP. I have to admit I hadn't even thought about the zoo...prayers for everyone on the east coast...especially the innocent who can't fend for themselves and depend on others. God I feel selfish right now!!
I forgot all about the zoo! If I run out of food I'll go to the zoo...thanks!
I believe there was quite a loss of life after Isabel...almost all the prairie dogs. I know someone out there has that information.
I hope they are planning some type of protection for the animals, they can't just up and leave.
And now there's that Barrie Tilghman dog park -- lots of canine poop & piss will be going downstream soon.
Irene is no big deal, and the MSM is just hyping it for ratings, according to your post at 8:01, so I'm guessing everything at the zoo will be just fine.
City of Salisbury sent out a bulletin of much info. It is on many of the media web-sites and blogs. One item pertained to the Zoo.
.Salisbury Zoo: Staff is in the process of prepping for the storm.
>> Computers are or have been backed up
>> Generators have been delivered to run freezers/refrigerators for the food
>> Sand bags will be placed in front of the visitor center and the gift shop doors
>> Larger windows on the buildings will be taped
>> All animals that can be locked indoors will be by tomorrow afternoon
>> Some animals (primarily birds) will be crated and moved to the Animal Services Building, the gator holding building and the Education Animal Holding building
>> The pelicans will be removed from the river, as well as the black-necked swan
>> Staff will be on site to monitor the situation
Many changes have been made to the river system since the last flooding situation at the zoo. Since the changes were made, the river has not backed up and created the flooding problems of years past. Staff will continue to watch the river and its status throughout the storm.
I thought about that... Not that I can help in any way, I have a baby at home. But I hope the animals are safe, since they didn't have a choice in being put there. Glad the staff are able to protect the animals as best they can.
