West Virginia Man Receives Probation for Hate Crimes

A Berkeley County man has been sentenced to five years of probation for threatening his black neighbors and shooting two of their dogs.

Under an agreement with prosecutors, Bruce Poole had entered an Alford plea to one count of committing a civil rights violation and two counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty. The charges stemmed from Poole threatening one of the neighbors with a shovel and gun in 2007, as well as using racial slurs, and shooting two of their dogs, leaving one to die.

The Journal reports Poole on Friday got a seven-year prison term for the civil rights violation and six months each for the animal-cruelty convictions, but the judge suspended them, opting for probation.

A co-defendant, Kendra Sulick, was convicted last year of three civil-rights violations.

finally, a judge with some sense. The article doesn't mention how the property values went down once the other family moved in.
