One In Five American Men Don't Work: Where's The Outrage?

FORTUNE -- Has anyone in Washington noticed that 20% of American men are not working? That's right. One out of five men in this country are collecting unemployment, in prison, on disability, operating in the underground economy, or getting by on the paychecks of wives or girlfriends or parents. The equivalent number in 1970, according to the McKinsey Global Institute, was 7%.

Both political parties have proven their talent in ginning up outrage over the federal budget, whether it's spiraling spending or millionaires collecting tax breaks on private jets. So today a tiresome, and dangerous, debt drama unfolds in real time, freezing leaders in both parties in their respective partisan corners.
Are these same leaders capable of confronting the fearsome fact that 4.3 million Americans have been jobless not just for months--but going on years? We are in danger of losing a generation of work-habituated Americans, especially men--and lawmakers can't see their way past November, 2012.

The America I knew growing up is gone. I, along with my father and his father, were raised with certain values such as working hard, paying your bills, supporting your family and not even calling in sick for work unless you are so ill you can't funtion, not for a hangover headache. Now it seems America cradles those who will not provide for themselves and punishes those who go out and pull their weight. It is sad when a hard working family struggles to fill a shopping cart in the grocery store when a family on welfare has a cart full of steaks and doritos and another cart full of kids. What a shame.

Have you ever gone to a Chinese restaurant, and watch them add the bill with a calculator and give change. They don't ring it up on the cash register because then they have to report the sale.

I'll say this again:

MD and other states do not require the collection of Unemployment Taxes from employers utilizing non-US citizens. This provides a financial incentive NOT to hire Americans to these employers. Not even LOCAL politicians have picked up on this yet it stares them in the face.

Stop whining about Americans being out of work until someone actually wants to do something about it. We're tailing at least a 7% savings in many cases to employers of foreign workers.

Not surprising at all. Men nowadays are just pure lazy. Thats why women are pretty much running everything...and earning the paycheck. Hopefully the next President is a woman! And yes, i'm a woman :)

The men have tricked their women into working for them like pimps.

You are a fool. Many of us have very good jobs so we can pay for women like you. I will place my salary next to yours anyday and we can see who contributes more. Don't make generalized statements unless you can back them up. Just as many women are mooches and live off their husbands. Wake up and smell the coffee toots.

I wonder hw soe of you would feel if you were laid off (as was I) and found yourself unable to find a job that pays enough. I'm not talking about paying ones worth, I mean that pays enough to cover taxes and child care. It's a difficult position to be in. I can say so from personal experience. Not everyone is "lazy", and not everyone that has a large family gets gov't help.
