Comptroller Peter Franchot has issued a warning to state residents of a new tax scam spreading throughout the Midwest and South that is targeting poor and elderly taxpayers and those drawing Social Security and government assistance, who normally do not file tax returns. Scammers claim the victims can receive “free money” from a “special stimulus program” and other fake refund programs.
Victims have been called by someone claiming to represent “Human Services Associates LLC.” The caller asks for personal information and permission to file the victim's tax return so that they can receive a refund check, according to a release from Franchot's office. The Ohio Attorney General is investigating the Michigan company.
Franchot reminded residents that they never should let someone prepare their tax returns without seeing the final document.
