Markell In Line to Lead Governors Association

The National Governors Association on Sunday tapped Gov. Jack Markell to be its vice chairman for the next year, putting him in line to lead the group starting next July.

Some of Markell's fellow governors said Delaware's chief executive could be uniquely positioned to advocate in Washington on economic, education and financial issues of importance for recession-battered states.

"I don't want to get Gov. Markell in trouble, but he's probably my favorite Democrat," said Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, a Republican. "Unlike some in his party, he appreciates that government at its best promotes the flourishing of private life."

Markell's direct pipeline to Vice President Joe Biden also is seen as an advantage for the NGA in negotiating with the White House on pertinent issues facing the state.
