While there is no question that professional football is an enormous part of American culture, what kind of role does it play in society as a whole? According to Baltimore Ravens star linebacker Ray Lewis, probably a much larger one than people realize.
On ESPN’s “Sportscenter” on Sunday night in an interview with Sal Paolantonio, Lewis — who was referred to as one of the three most influential players in the NFL, along with the Indianapolis Colts’ Peyton Manning and the New England Patriots’ Tom Brady — addressed the possibility of a canceled 2011 NFL season. The main threat according to Lewis? Pride.

Moronic statement - plain & simple
I would love to see the lock-out , with all sports.
It is crazy the salaries these people make for playing games.
Besides that , most who are college grads. can't even spell or add.
You do have to understand Lewis is proven to be a criminal himself! His money got him off of murdering that girl. Or at least covering it up. Lost all respect for him years ago!
He belongs in jail for promoting violence
So the NFL controls the crime rate,I didn't see that one coming!
If we dont have football who cares. Half of them are nothing but criminals anyway. Taking our money(those of you who buy NFL merchandise) and wanting more. Sounds like they are soon to be politicians. What would they have if it wasnt for the american people being addicted to these sports. Let them go broke who cares. I quit watching baseball when those greedy bastards went on strike and the world series was canceled. Screw em they arent getting any of my hard earned money.
With all due respect to Ray, the statement makes no sense. In fact, I think crime would decrease. Less gambling, less drunken fans
He's right. A lot of these players turn to crime when they are not playing unless of course they are in prison. Vick comes to mind.
Influential to who? The prison inmates across the country. Why would he make such a statement? Is he calling for riots or something if the players don't get their way.
Send him and the others to Afghanistan so they can fight and shoot each other there.
Good call Al.
Time to start watching more college ball or use walk ons like that movie the replacements. These guys need to be replaced.
I think the point here is that people in the ghetto and elsewhere will become bored without football to occupy their time and will wind up getting involved in more illegal activity. On that front, he has a point.
Pathetic when the nfl controls whether or not a 7 - 11 will be burglerized.
He is saying with less to do on Sunday's, AKA watching football, then the crime will go up because people will not have anything better to do.
