Michael Steele, the former lieutenant governor of Maryland and head of the Republican National Committee, will join MSNBC as a regular political commentator, according to a report Monday in Politico.
The new position comes after months of speculation about Steele’s next move. A regular guest on the cable news circuit, Steele had previously been in talks with Fox News and CNN.
“It’s an honor to contribute and engage in the dialogue on MSNBC,” Steele said in a statement to Politico. Multiple phone calls and e-mails to MSNBC were not returned Monday morning.
As a Republican, Steele will stand out on the network -- which is known more for its liberal commentary -- just as the 2012 GOP presidential nomination fight takes shape.
Steele, the party’s first black leader, had a rocky tenure at the RNC and ultimately pulled out of his bid for a second term in January. Steele, 52, also served as Maryland’s lieutenant governor from 2003 until 2007 under Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr.

His last name should be spelled Steal.
Yes mr. Steal has sold his soul to the libs!!!!
Finally a moment of clarity for M.S. or just ran out of money.
MSNBC will be far from liberal in the future as they were recently acquired by Comcast along with a number of other NBC Universal divisions. Keith Olbermann is now gone and the likes of Maddow and Matthews may not necessarily be around as their contracts come due. Ratings is the name of the game, and they have been down, down, down on MSNBC for several years.
It's becoming clear to me. This man will do anything for a buck. Kinda glad he is not representing Maryland right now even though a democrat won the seat.
Sell out?! Seems to me the man was put up as chairman to counterweight the appeal of the first black pres., even though the establishment screamed "nonsense", led his party to a sweeping victory in 2010, and was promptly pushed out the door. So tell me who sold out who.
245 you have it right. Others who have posted are behind the curve, this is not the NBC of the past. It's changing, and for just what you mentioned...ratings. Steele is a good guy, who did a lot of good for the party, and was sold out by the GOP after a historic 2010 election season. He'll do well without the reins of the chairmanship on TV, and he'll open up some eyes. While we all laugh at msnbc(who can't really lol), the higher ups are changing the guard. Matthews/Olbermann(already out)/Maddow/etc will soon be a thing of the past. They don't pull ratings, and in a country like ours, they never will preaching to the soapbox left. Steele is just one move of many to come, that have been long overdue.
