Although poverty isn't much fun, it can be entertaining and informative to impose severe restrictions on spending for a short period, just to see what you're made of.
In a post on Serendipity's Guide To Saving, the author — who is saving up for braces — challenges herself to survive eight days on just $50. She writes about potentially avoiding a budget-killing trip to the movie theater and planning out meals covered by a single trip to the grocery store.
Bills aside, how long could you survive on $50 of spending money?

Where theres will theres a way.
30 days with ease!
I would never make it to work, it cost me $83.00 to fill my gas tank the other day.
Not feeling too sorry for anyone who is still driving a gas guzzler after all the price swings we have with gasoline over the past decade. These price swings are not going away as too many people are making money on speculation so if you continue to drive a gas guzzler you will continue to spend astronomical amounts on gasoline.

Some people have no choice but to drive what they have. Some need these vehicles for different reasons. While I don't really care if you feel sorry for them or not you really shouldn't judge anyone until you know the entire circumstances. You would be the first to throw a hissy fit if the repairman you just called showed up and said they didn't have a part because they were driving a yugo vs a van.

It doesn't matter what you drive. If you drive a death trap econobox you costs for gas have still doubled in the past year.
I live alone and sometimes $50.00 will last me a week. It has to because of my small take home pay. I have learned that I don't need new clothes or eat out in restaurants any more. Sometimes I envy those who are wearing the latest styles and driving new cars and eating out/going to the movies. But its my choice and all my bills get paid first - anything left over is a bonus.
If we didn't have to factor in gas, I could do this with no problem.
We grow a garden so we have a well stocked freezer. We also buy meats in bulk and freeze them when they're on a good sale.
We could eat out of our house with buying nothing extra besides eggs and milk for probably a month.
We make our own bread too.
The gas is a whole nother situation. I commute 25 miles each way 5x a week for work. My vehicle gets 25mpg so that'a chunk of money just in gas.
We don't go shopping just to spend money which is what a lot of our friends seem to do, so we always have more money than they do even though they make more money than us.
It CAN be done, without the gas in the equation.
Can we say Ramen Noodles?

If that's all you have, of course you would survive! :-)
I would love to have $50 a day to spend. I spend about $15 and that is including gas, Breakfast, lunch and Dinner.
