Superintendent Of Schools Dr. John E. Fredericksen Part Of U.S. Education Delegation To China

Wicomico County Superintendent of Schools Dr. John E. Fredericksen will be part of a Dec. 2-10 U.S. education delegation to China with the goal of expanding student access to world language instruction.

The planning for this trip involved Maryland Superintendent of Schools Dr. Nancy Grasmick, Washington County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Betty Morgan, University of Maryland College of Education Dean Dr. Donna Wiseman, Dr. Fredericksen and other educators. The delegation includes a spectrum of world language educators and leaders of the Board of Visitors of the Confucius Institute of the University of Maryland.

Members of the delegation will explore educational exchange opportunities, share best practices, and apply for Maryland to secure Chinese language/culture classroom teachers and resources. One program of particular interest: China has the Confucius classroom program where China funds a teacher and equipment for American students.

During its visit to China, the delegation will be hosted by Hanban and the Confucius Institute (Chinese Language Council International Inc.). The tentative itinerary includes stops at Hanban and the Confucius Institute Headquarters, China’s Ministry of Education, and major universities, schools and education districts. Dr. Fredericksen and other delegates will travel to Beijing, Tianjin and possibly Shanghai.

“This trip will put Wicomico County and Maryland Public Schools at the forefront of making world language contacts and exploring language opportunities that will benefit our students,” Dr. Fredericksen said. “I am honored to be a part of this delegation, and will share my experiences with the Board of Education and the community when I return.”

The trip to China is being made at no cost to Wicomico County Public Schools.

Yeah the trip is no cost, but what about his other expenses when he gets over there??? Really what does going to China have to do with helping Wicomico County Students???? Unbelievable. Just Unbelievable. Can we find out if his wife is going??? Bet she is - is this on "grant money" One good thing is maybe when he is gone the Board President can make a decision and at least he won't be bullying his staff.

As a County tax payer I want to know who is going to pay for this? Who is going to pay his salary while he is away from his daily duties?

How is this going to benefit Wicomico County Schools?

How is this going to benefit Wicomico County tax payers?

I am sick of this country with it's open arm policy with China and other foreign countries!!

Perhaps instead of China, he should take a trip to PES and fix the gutters!?!?
I am so disgusted...Like he is going to bring anything back to the students, except a bill!

Dr. Holman who was superintendent many years ago spent almost an entire summer in China and drew her salary. And no one complained then.

Was Joe's blog around many years ago?

Yeah, right. No cost to Wicomico County taxpayers! Who is paying for the trip? Maybe the state...like we don't pay state taxes, too...or maybe a federal grant. The taxpayers always pay1

Should we possibly be more concerned about our students learning English? Then again, once China takes control of us, maybe we should be able to respond to our leader!!

Good for you Dr. Fredericksen. As a taxpayer, I am pleased that you are looking for opportunities to bring back to Wicomico County and Maryland.

Maryland is #1 in the nation in education and this is a great honor for our county.

Let's all try to put a positive spin on this rather than bash the county. If you are concerned about the bill for this, please contact MSDE and ask Dr. Grasmick.

Are you people kidding me? Like this guy doesn't have enough to do in our school system, and he's going to go off gallavanting around in China - for what? China is already exploiting the US adn we are letting it happen. The real question here is how is China using this to benefit itself? There is ALWAYS and agenda when it comes to the Chinese, and their government is simply hostile towards the US in a passive manner. As a vet, a taxpaer and resident, and as a school teacher, I STRONGLY oppose this! This school system has such severe needs right now, and having our 'leader' (and I use this term in jest) go off and have a vaca is just crazy! My suggestion is since the Super has sooooo much time on his hands, he can get his butt in a classroom where we need real help, right now! John, if you are reading this, you are a jerk, and to even consider this just proves how much of a fool you are!
