FORT MEADE, Md. -- Just hours after being found guilty at his court-martial, Army Lt. Col. Terrence Lakin said he was ashamed and remorseful over his decision to refuse deployment to Afghanistan earlier this year, but he hedged on questions about President Obama’s citizenship.
“I don’t want [my career] to end this way,” a tearful Lakin said to military jurors during the sentencing phase of his trial Wednesday afternoon. “I want to continue to serve. ... It crushed me not to be on deployment. I can be on a plane tomorrow. I’d truly do that.”
Lakin, a 17-year Army physician, was sentenced to six months in prison and dismissal from the service on Thursday after being found guilty of disobeying orders and ignoring his deployment orders. In April, Lakin posted an online video declaring he would not return to Afghanistan with his unit until questions regarding Obama’s birth certificate were answered to his satisfaction. The move made him an instant hero to the birther movement, which helped him raise money for his legal defense.
Obama was born in Hawaii, but questions about his parents and overseas upbringing were raised during his 2008 presidential campaign. Hawaiian officials that year verified the existence of his birth certificate, addressing those issues for all but a fringe group that insists that the president is not legally qualified to serve in the White House.

You can't get a driver's license without showing some clerk your birth certificate. Obama became PRESIDENT without ever showing anyone HIS birth certificate and actually has spent MILLIONS of taxpayer funds to AVOID showing it to anyone. I'm not one of the "fringe" people the article refers to, but I DO want to know why he went through so much trouble instead of just saying "here --- here's my birth certificate. Next question, please".
2:07 it actually has been publicly addressed by the state government of Hawaii, and Obama hasn't spent millions of anyone's money to cover anything up... where does this info come from?
This is not about the president of the U. S. This is about a military man who thought he was beyond the Uniform Code of Military Justice that has been in place for many years and followed by millions of men/women in all branches of the military. His conduct was a disgrace to all the men/women who have and are still serving in two wars. Don't be sad or angry with the punishment he recieve. As a retired/veteran, I feel this man punishment during wartime was a "wimp" move. After six months, this man will do just find w/o his retirement check he don't deserve. He'll recieve plenty from the V. A. In a years time, he'll be working for a Republican that has his same views making over a million bucks or more a year. I don't feel sorry for this man.
2:07...I am not a "birther"...I think the issue has been addressed (and solved) by the Congress. I merely point out that he has NOT shown anyone his birth certificate. Hawaii DID confirm his birth, but NOT with a published birth certificate. As for the millions spent, he HAS fought several lawsuits which attempted to force him to produce a birth certificate. Those legal actions on his behalf were paid for with taxes, not HIS money, and they were not cheap. One of those lawsuits was initiated by an attorney in Pennsylvania. Again, my ONLY question is "why hasn't he just shown everyone his birth certificate?".....not a "record of birth", the the actual certificate. Seems pretty simple way to shut the "birthers" up, doesn't it? So....why hasn't he done that? An answer that doesn't accuse anyone of being a rabid Fox news fanatic, or a crazy conspiracy freak, but merely gives a factual, reasonable explanation for Obama's evasion of that simple act. Thats what I'm looking for. But I think it will be hard to defend that which has not been defended very well by the principal party.
Its a shame because Obama was not born in America its a proven fact he hates America just like his wife hates America
