It's because some roads still have ice on them? Guess what it is Winter and there is a possibility of having ice on everything.

I don't remember getting a phone call from church yesterday telling me there was a 1 hour delay because there was ice on the road?

I don't remember my job calling me today to tell me there was a 1 hour delay because there was ice on the road?

I don't remember any of the stores calling me to tell me there will be a 1 hour delay because there was ice on the road?

A simple reminder phone call stating there was ice in some areas and to be careful is all that might be necessary.

Closing schools on Friday was totally unnecessary and a joke and John Fredericksen needs to go. If the Wicomico County School Board members can't take care of him then I suggest we take action against them.

i remember some knucklehead saying "what the Heck (not beck) was wrong with wicomico county?!" when the snow first started coming down. then, 3 hours later, had pictures of how horrible roads were.

There are no words for this decision. Hearing his voice first thing is not the way I liking waking up..Perhaps if he put a little pep in his voice, something other than the usual drone.

the one hour delay today does nothing except put the buses out when there is more traffic on the roads. It's an extra hour nap for the teachers.

It's for the childrens safety!! NOT
It's for the overpaid teachers!

Well it's now more than one hour past the time to start school and guess what. There is still ice on the back roads so....wth?

Although it seem unfathomable that school would be delayed three days after a very minimal snow fall, it must be asked why are you blaming the school? The streets still have snow and ice on them, I see it myself as I drive to work on time. Blame, instead, the very poor effort of the road crews who seem to yearly be unable to deal with snow.

I agree an hour delay is worthless...especially when the temp stays under the freezing mark but I agree more with 9:08...why doesn't someone send these road crews to New York or PA to see how real road crews deal with snow? That would be money well spent!

Roads are still icy in my neighborhood but getting better daily.

I have been here for many years now, but this school delay for snow never ceases to amaze me. I grew up where it sometimes snowed on the first day of school in September and just kept on snowing until spring yet we never had delays in school or school closings or we never would have gone to school. This area is sooooooo when it comes to this stuff. Stuff happens people but life goes on, learn to deal with it and quit complaining about a little bit of snow.

i go to school at Frostburg State University in Frostburg, MD and we had ONE (2) hour delay, and that was due to the 10 inches of SNOW we got overnight haha.

I wish everybody would stop complaining. I live in willards md and these back roads are still cover in ice and snow , we never had a snow plow come down our road so its taking twice as long to melt. Its dark outside still went my child gets on the bus at 6:10 a.m. so I'm glad that they were delayed until it was light outside so the bus driver could see the road conditions ( ice patches on the roads )

Wicomico County may look odd for being the only one having a delay today but that's because most of the other school systems on the shore are already closed for the holidays. So I guess the teachers in those school systems are even more "overpaid" and they got a longer "nap" today!

The school board is damned if they do and damned if they don't. Fredrickson doesn't make the decision on his own. If they hadn't delayed school and a bus was in an accident everyone would be complaining about that. And probably someone would sue the county. They delay it trying to avoid accidents and lawsuits--has nothing to do with teachers getting more sleep.

Overpaid teachers? You sir or mam have apparently never worked in or been involved in the school system. I have not yet met an over paid teacher. Teachers are expected to teach lesson plans, manners, morals, general hygene, amongst other things that parents today are negelcting to teach their children or just dont care to teach their children. They are expected to do this with little funding, little parental support, and hardly any backing from the school administrators or board members. Teachers are given a certian amount of suplies (example reams of paper) and expected to make them last. If the supplies dont last, the teachers spend money out of their own pockets to supply the students with what is needed.

So really 8:55, perhaps you should think before you comment...

Teachers are rich and overpaid!!! Ice ... Snow ... delay ...

Are you all serious? You want them to plow an inch of snow? Do you know how much equipment could be damaged and how much fuel would be used? You all have stated that you don't want to pay taxes, yet you are screaming for thousands of dollars to be spent to "plow" an inch of snow. What do you want. Besides, its not the road crews faults. They only do as they are told. If they don't plow, it is because they weren't instructed to. Wouldn't you rather them save the money for a measurable snow fall? Why don't you all call the State and complain for taking the money from the county that is used for this type of thing, or call your local council member and let them know that roads should be a priority. If you don't recall, the roads department got huge cuts in personnel over the last two years. They are operating with about half the staff then they had 20 years ago, with more to maintain. It doesn't have anything to do with knowing how to plow, it has more to do with having the resources and personnel to do it with. Make up your minds. What services do you want, and which can you live without. We went through this last year, but apparently some just don't get it. Should we expect them to volunteer? What are they supposed to do with a road that is ice covered? You can’t plow it. Do you think that they have money to salt every road in the county? How about this, slow down, and don't drive like the roads are dry. Hers a tip for future reference. Moisture + 32 degrees and below = ice. (slippery). Make a copy of this and tape it to your dashboards in case you can't remember.

If they spread salt or calcium before the snowfall they wouldn't have to plow as much or if at all.

Are you people kidding? Our children are supposed to be our most precious people in our lives. You can't have it both ways. If schools didn't have delays or cancellations, then where would you be? Let me guess, on the let's sue wagon. Are you shallow or just can't figure out on short notice how to manage your daily responsibilities.

Anonymous said...

5:57, what part don't you understand. There is not money to spread salt (or calcium) over 700 miles of roads. The state may have the luxury to do that (especially since they stole money from the counties) What is so hard to understand about that. Do you know how much money it would take? How about equipment? Are you prepared to pay more taxes so you can have it this way? It isn't possible. If you want the roads thawed, I suggest each of you get a long extension cord and a blow dryer and go out and melt all the ice along your property.

I was on the back roads last night to go to a family function and I didn't realize the road was a sheet of ice until I slid. I left early because the roads were so icey. The roads near my house were fine but for those of you who question the delay need to take a ride on the back roads.

The majority of the roads around here are back roads. When will these be just as important as the main roads? 9:52 I understand your point but the treatment of the roads is done like most other things around, half a$$ed. If Wico counties taxes werent so high already I could see your "not enough money" excuse as being ok, BUT we have one of the highest property tax rates in the state yet other counties with thousands of miles of roads dont have this problem. BTW Delaware is right next door and Im not too sure if you know this, but their taxes are even less than ours. WTH do I pay taxes for, no curbs, no street lights, no infrastructure, no painted lines on roads and horrible services? Where does all the money go? Having moved here from a horribly corrupt state that was in debt past their eyeballs they still somehow had good public services. NEWSFLASH, everything costs money, if their isnt any, maybe you need to suggest solutions instead of make excuses.

Joseph Albero said...

I don't give a crap what ANY of you say, a ONE HOUR DELAY will NOT help conditions. It was complete crap, period.

Anonymous said...

7:26, maybe you should offer solutions. Delaware is plowing and salting with a STATE budget. The county roads department is given a small budget from the county general fund that is not adequate. Maybe you should start screaming at the state so that we can get back what is ours. Where do you suggest the money comes from? The State doesn't have near as much roadway to maintain in this county, yet they get ten times the dollars. Keep in mind that education gets half of the counties budget right off the top. Now find the money to treat ALL the roads. You won't.

So by your theory 1:38 every single county in Maryland will have poorly plowed roads due to the state taking the money from the counties. Sounds like a great news story for WBOC if you ask me. Wait.....they dont report news, they just give us the weather and feed us more local lies.

BTW its not my responsibility to offer solutions. We have public "officials" that are being paid handsomely to supposedly solve these problems. Considering that several Wico public schools perform poorly on state tests year after year you'd think that something would be done about it. All I know is my property taxes went up and my value went down. How bout you explain where the money we have coming in REALLY is going? This county is pathetic.
