1 In 22 Blacks Will Get HIV, New CDC Report Says

Black Americans have highest risk of being diagnosed with the AIDS virus

Health officials estimate that 1 in 22 black Americans will be diagnosed with the AIDS virus in their lifetime — more than twice the risk for Hispanics and eight times that of whites.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported the numbers Thursday. The report says the lifetime risk is 1 in 52 for Hispanics, and 1 in 170 for whites.

Asian-Americans had the lowest lifetime risk, at about 1 in 222.

The data is not considered surprising. Earlier research has shown blacks, especially, have a high risk of HIV infection.

The estimates are based on 2007 death certificates, population figures and HIV surveillance data from 37 states and Puerto Rico. They update similar calculations reported two years ago.

I read something about this a while back. I remember they attribute the high number to the living conditions and surrounding culture habits.

Both HIV prevalence rates and the numbers of people dying from AIDS vary greatly between African countries.

In Somalia and Senegal the HIV prevalence is under 1% of the adult population, whereas in Namibia, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe around 15-20% of adults are infected with HIV. In three southern African countries, the national adult HIV prevalence rate now exceeds 20%. These countries are Botswana (23.9%), Lesotho (23.2%) and Swaziland (26.1%).2

West Africa has been less affected by HIV and AIDS, but some countries are experiencing rising HIV prevalence rates. In Cameroon HIV prevalence is now estimated at 5.1% and in Gabon it stands at 5.9%. In Nigeria, HIV prevalence is low (3.1%) compared to the rest of Africa. However, because of its large population (it is the most populous country in sub-Saharan Africa), this equates to around 2.6 million people living with HIV.

Ask prison officials. Ask prison officials how there are more people locked up in county, state and federal prisons then any other country in the world. Ask prison officials why the rate of HIV amongst inmates is so high? Finally, ask these prison officials, how does the community protect themselves from HIV infected inmates when they are release into the community from prison. This is why HIV infection is extremely high among Afican American.

There are too many heterosexual African American Black men who go to prison and come out "on the down low", bi-sexual, tri-anything sexual or straight out homosexual. These men aren't man enough or will not tell their girlfriends, their wives or both; they had sex with other men while they were incarcerated. This is not about Africa. This country alone is full of homosexual and child predators.
