Sarah Palin, others argue the mosque would disrespect the memory of Sept. 11 victims
NEW YORK — A contentious plan for a mosque near the World Trade Center site got a boost Tuesday as New York City's landmarks panel voted to allow the demolition of the building that the mosque would replace.
The Landmarks Preservation Commission's decision allows organizers to transform the 152-year-old building into an Islamic community center blocks from the site of the Sept. 11 attacks.
Some national politicians, including former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, and the Anti-Defamation League have come out in recent weeks against plans for the mosque, saying it disrespects the memory of Sept. 11 victims.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg has supported the mosque.
The commission voted 9-0 against granting landmark status to the building. Commissioners said the building didn't meet historic criteria to qualify as a landmark.
Group: Mosque will be center for moderate voices
If built, the mosque will be part of an Islamic community center to be operated by a group called the Cordoba Initiative, which says the center will be a space for moderate Muslim voices.
The commission's job was to determine whether the building is architecturally important enough to preserve, not to consider the merits of the proposed mosque.

RESPONSE: When we lost 2,976 hard working Americans, just doing their daily jobs on American soil who should have gone home to their wives,husbands and children that night, instead of burning to death, jumping to their death rather than burn, That's why, now do you understand? This is a disgrace! If the muslim people had an ounce of dignity or humility they would move this "community center" to another location. The point is that they don't care about our suffering from 9-11 and they want to shove it in our face. Moderate muslim...not in this group!

I would have to agree with the majority here. While they may be within their constitutional right to build there, it is simply unnecessary.

They won't say where they are getting $150 million to build it. Why not? Makes me suspicious about WHO is actually behind building it. And why does it have to be built RIGHT THERE? For $150 million, it could be built just about anywhere in New York, so WHY HERE? Because its as close as they could get to to site of 9/11 and it IS a slap across our collective face, or better put, a shot across our bow. Religious freedom? All for it. Good taste? Class? Compassion and empathy? Not shown here by our peace loving friends, the Muslims. Bloomberg said the firefighters and other first responders who died in the 9/11 attacks had done so to protect the constitution. To deny religious freedom to Muslims would play into the terrorists' hands, he said.
"In rushing into those burning buildings, not one asked, 'What god do you pray to? What beliefs do you hold?'" Bloomberg said of the first responders. "We do not honor their lives by denying the very constitutional rights they died protecting."

You are allowed to be a christian in Middle Eastern countries. However, you cannot prophesize in that area. There are many immoral and criminal activites going on in Christian churches. Child sex abuse, fraud, misuse of funds, priests paying for sex, alcoholism and drug abuse. By straying we have others to take over. The people that atttacked us were not Muslims, just Arab drug dealers. They hate democracy, because their drug trade would come to an ultimate end. Therefore, they hide behind a religion to sucker unsuspecting people to committ heinous acts. Get an English translation of the koran and they will wake up and overthrow the insurgents. Illiteracyu and poverty will make people turn to insurgents. Lets take over the middle East, transform their language into English, and feed and help them.

People for the mosque keep citing the Constitution and freedom of religion. No one is saying that building a mosque in this locale would be unconstitutional, it is just plain old tasteless. Utterly and completely without class.
The terrorists did not care about what religion the victims were. They were only interested in terror.
The site is blocks away from ground zero. On record, citizens from over 100 countries were killed in the attack. Some were certain to be Muslims victims as well.
I for one don't care what religion the terrorists were, they only represented terror.
The questions are these:
What rally happened on Sept 11, 2001?
Why hasn't there been a real investigation?
Why was it treated as an act of war when it was obviously a crime?
Why did we invade Iraq - when it was admitted they did not get involved?
Now that the Taliban has been defeated - why are we still in Afghanistan?
Finally, let's talk about the crime itself: the events leading up to it, the money bet on the airline companies (shorts), and the stolen billions in gold bullion in the federal reserve bank (in the World Trade Center), the lost records of Enron in WTC 7, and the mysterious events leading to the collapse of WTC 7.
Let's wake up and smell the "inside job" staring us right in the face!
