Handicap Ramps

With billions of taxpayers money spend on handicap ramps, why do so many choose to ride right down the center of the road instead?

Back in the 1960's there was a cry for handicap people to have access to shopping and businesses. Over the past 6 years I have taken numerous photos of people on motorized scooters riding down Rt. 50, Rt. 13 and all over Downtown Salisbury.

Some have a tall flag on their scooter allowing motorists to see them but 95% of them do not. Nevertheless, there are ramps for them to access the sidewalks and they simply do not do so.

Before someone gets seriously hurt, do you think law enforcement should do something about this or simply let it be?

I think law enforcement should do something about it. There is a guy who rides down the road in Delmar at night with no reflectors of any kind on his chair or scooter and he is very hard to see. I almost hit him one night. Yet if I had hit him I'm sure it would have been my fault for not going slow enough to be able to see him. And I was only going 25mph which is the posted speed limit in Delmar. But it is ridiculous. Of course I think they should do something about all of those scooters that are riding all over the roads today with people who have no license, no helmets, no tags, etc. Just my opinion.

Anything operated on the road should have front and rear lights, turn signals, brake lights and a horn.

Not everyone operating a scooter is without a license. I ride mine and keep it in tip top shape making sure all of the safety features are working. I also carry insurance for a mere $100 per year. BTW when I purchased it from the dealer I also paid MD sales tax. Helmets on anything should be at the rider's choice. If you don't mind having your head cracked open too bad.

Now bicycles are a whole other can of worms. They are on and off sidewalks at their discretion. Ride in opposing traffic. Weave in and out of cars, etc. I have seen City Police drive past them operating incorrectly and keep on going.

What are the laws in Maryland and/or Salisbury pertaining to motorized vehicles on sidewalks? I know there are many areas that motorized vehicles are not allowed on sidewalks...so maybe some are not sure what the laws are.

Some of the sidewalks are a far cry from being ADA correct. Whether that is to much of a lip on the cut-out into the sidewalk, uneven parts of the sidewalk being a chair user I can assure you in alot of cases sidewalks can be very hard to navigate. That being said however pushing or riding in the middle of the road as the picture shows is reckless and dangerous to that man as well as motorists, there are many more resposible ways of riding on the road

It was just a few years ago that the Mayor's wife in Delmar was struck by a car trying to help a disabled guy in a wheelchair get across the road in a rainstorm. I wonder if this guy mentioned by an earlier commenter is the same one?!
Many have complained to the powers that be in Delmar about this guy but NOTHING is done!

Personally, I never figured out why a Super Walmart has so many handicapped parking spaces for people to walk around a store as large as a football field.

You asked "why do they do it".
Because , "they can" , nobody enforces this issue. That fat guy you always talk about , Taylor , does it too.
