Delmar Elementary

Joe,

I was just reading on the WBOC website a few comments left by parents that were upset that 5th grade is moving to the high school in Delmar. WBOC also reported that “Some parents are concerned about fifth-graders mixing with high school students. But officials say the only time they will meet is on the bus and drivers will work to keep them separated.”

NEWSFLASH – I live on the Delaware side of Delmar and all 3 of my children (9th grader, 5th grader, and kindergarten) ride the same bus. You would not believe the stuff my 5th grader has told me; she knows who smokes, who does drugs, and a lot of other things that I don’t even want to repeat.

A few years ago I talked to a then school board member about them riding the bus with older kids and he said that was one thing he was going to work on since he got elected. I think he got a new bus route worked out for his house and his elementary age children but mine still ride with high school kids.

Either way, I think its about time that Delmar gets their own Elementary School or if Wicomico Co. expects Delmar, MD children to come over to the DE side for 6th grade on then they should be willing to make the renovations necessary to the Elementary school to keep 5th grade where they should be.

First off Delmar needs to make up it's mind . Are you Delaware or Maryland ! pick one already !

I understand you not wanting the small kids riding with the older kids, but expense wise, isnt it cheaper to put them together? I mean, the buses serve a purpose, period. The school provides a ride to school. period. As a taxpayer, I want the least amount of money spent on transportation and would rather have all available funds going toward the actual curriculum.

Years ago 1 of the main reasons I didn't send my kid to the Magnet program was because they would have to ride the bus with High School kids. Not the kind of education I wanted them to have.

to the poster,

it has nothing to do with Delmar Elem, needing renovations, it has a lot to do with someone having balls enough to make sure that all children attending the school district actually live in the district. The kids that go to Delmar Elem "unlawfully" will end up in Delmar High, therefore becoming Delawares problem in later years. The Delmar District is hands down the best District around and parents will do whatever it takes to get their kids in that district (hence, over crowded).I personally know kids that live by the Salisbury airport that go to Delmar, and will be in 5th grade next school year and guess what, they are now Delawares kids because the 5th graders are going there. Renovations are not needed, as many kids as you can fit into the 14 portables at Delmar Elem is probably how many kids are going there unlawfully!!

9:15 either does not have children or does not care what education they get from older filthy mouthed kids. It's our job to raise our kids with morals and shield them from filth. If not then... well just look at the majority of our youth today and in a few more years they will have even less morals. I have a child in Delmar Elementary and I agree with 9:20.

I agree - are you De or Md - pick one.
And to the poster about spending money on transportation - lets get Delmar on the same school calendar as Wicomico or vice versa - too much money is wasted when the bus runs half empty because Wicomico has school but Delmar doesnt or half days really kill me - running the same bus route 3 times in one day cause they couldnt get on the same page doesnt make sense at all.

Amen! And, some people wonder why elementary school children know everything about sex already and are getting to second base by the time they are ten years old. People always ask...where do they learn this stuff?

How many of you rode a bus when you were young? And how many, like me rode K-12 on the same bus? It's not a big deal. Just one more thing for the delmarva dimwits to bitch about.

1130 It does make a big difference when you have young ones riding with teenagers. Many teenagers have a tendency to frighten and intimidate the heck out of little ones. It's convenient for older sibling babysitting strategies but it is not a very environment for the little ones who have no older siblings. They grow up way too fast.

I dont see what the big problem is. these 5th graders will be going to highschool with these same 8th graders once they hit the high school anyway. this will give them 4 years at each. Elem, middle, and then high school.

11:30- Society is a lot different now than it was when I road the bus(about 15 years ago). Like I said in my earlier comment MORALS have gone downhill and will continue to until parents start being parents again. Oh and if you don't like Delmarva go back to where you came from.

Right on! I knew I couldn't be the only one that thinks Delmar, DE needs its own Elementary School. Then, we don't have any issues between the districts - Wicomico kids can go to Wicomico and Delaware kids to Delaware.

That sounds like a great idea. But I for one, DO NOT want my child going to Wi-Hi. Thanks, but no thanks. Just for the record, most of the ones who are scared to death for thir children to go to the high school are probably a) sending their child to a new place and are uncomforable with it anyway and b)did NOT go to either of the school board meetings to discuss.

You can tell 12:57 isn't from Delmar. We don't decipher between DE and MD. Our community is Delmar and you will not split it up. You have to live here to understand. Maybe parents should worry about teaching their children right from wrong and they won't have to worry about bad influences.

Everything will be fine, Delmar takes care of its own. Trust me, your elementary school kids know plenty already. It's up to you as parents to guide your kids and talk to them about what is right and what is wrong. You'll see that the 5th graders at Delmar Middle will be a success.

If Delmar was re-districted those kids that were bused from Delmar to East Salisbury would lose their choice to go to Delmar Middle and High Schools. This would further put a strain on Wicomico County schools. I worked on the re-districting committee and this is something that was discussed and Dr. Fredericksen agreed with.

Cheers-

The town is in 2 states...Delaware kids should go to Laurel Elem School ....kids in Delmar, Maryland old enough to go to Middle School should attend a Maryland Middle School and then a Maryland High School. And to the poster that said they did not want their child in Wi-Hi..your children will have to learn to deal with adversity at some point in their lives..just like if they went to Delmar, they have to deal with the Good Ole Boys network...it has been alive and well for years in the town too big for one state.

I'd rather him deal with the Good Ole Boy network than me dealing with Short's funeral after some thug shoots him. Deal with Salilsbury's problems first and then I'll consider it...until then, I want my child in a school with respectable children and respectable teachers. I have two older children there and they have been pretty successful.
