WHAT WILL the car thieves THINK OF NEXT?
The car thieves peer through the windshield of your car or vehicle, write down the VIN # from the label on the dash, go to the local car dealership and request a duplicate key based on the VIN #..
I didn't believe this e-mail, so I called Chrysler-Dodge and pretended I had lost my keys. They told me to just bring in the VIN #, and they would cut me one on the spot, and I could order the keyless device if I wanted.
The Car Dealer's Parts Department will make a duplicate key from the VIN #, and collect payment from the thief who will return to your car.
He doesn't have to break in, do any damage to the vehicle, or draw attention to himself.. All he has to do is walk up to your car, insert the key and off he goes to a local chop shop with your vehicle.
You don't believe it?
It IS that EASY.
To avoid this from happening to you, simply put some dark tape (electrical tape, duct tape or medical tape) across the VIN Number Metal Label located on the dashboard.
By law, you cannot remove the VIN, but you CAN cover it so it can't be viewed through the windshield by a car thief.

Most dealerships will tell you that on the phone but require a license or proof of ID along with a pretty hefty fee for key. They are all chipped now so we paid $200.00 for ours. Not saying your a re wrong but they will not do this for cheap cars maybe hummers.
Any time I have done this, the dealer pulls out a log book and writes in my driver's license information as to who he gave the key to. They also ask to see the title or loan payment papers to get the VIN off of that.
If you go to a dealer that does not require this information, he should be reported to the police immediately.
The Vin Number has to be readable by law Enforcement If not LAw Enforcement has the right to enter the car and uncover the vin and read it
you should need a reg. and a drivers license to obtain a new key!if its not reg.it shouldnt need to be driven!!

Not just cheap cars. We needed an extra key for my husband's Honda Fit, and after we paid the $75 for the key, the car had to be brought into the dealer so the key could be programmed. In all, it cost well over $150...for a key! However, this prevents anyone from using the VIN to get a key made.
I know that Pohanka dealerships require you show proof of ownership of the car. I work for a used car dealership and I always have to take in the title to the car when requesting a key be cut.
We don't mind though because we know it is OUR car.
Unless my automobile is out on the highway breaking the law, law enforcement has no business to my VIN.
Maryland law requires your vin be visible.
like stated before most cars 2006 and newer (and a few older) keys have to be programed to the car to get it to start. But thiefs can still get into the car.
Ditto on Pohanka.We had lost our only key and they informed us they could provide another one with the VIN#,photo ID AND current registration.Good policy.
Just talked to sherwood chrysler parts. You have to present the registration, your license, and proof of insurance. No keys made without this.
