Bogus Text Message Warning
Beware Text Warning Your Bank Card Requires Reactivation
Consumers have reported an outbreak of bogus text messages notifying them that their Wachovia bank cards starting with "4828" have been deactivated. Cardholders are urged not to fall for the "SMishing" (short message phishing) attack and should not call the phone number in the message.
Not only do you risk unauthorzed charges and identity theft by revealing your personal and account information to the scammer, some SMishing attacks can will infect your smartphone with a Trojan Horse virus that will highjack the device's web features and become part of a botnet, or network of computers, to conduct further criminal activity.
